Former Huskies outfielder makes major league debut
Former Duluth Huskies outfielder Cal Stevenson made his Major League Baseball debut for the Oakland Athletics on Aug. 10. He is the 301st former Northwoods League player to reach the majors.
Stevenson played for the Huskies in 2015. He was drafted in the 10th round of the 2018 MLB Draft by the Blue Jays.
In 2015 with the Huskies, Stevenson played in 49 games and hit .326 with one home run, four triples and 24 RBI. He stole 16 bases and scored 41 times.
Stevenson began his professional career in 2018 with the Blue Jays rookie-level team in the Gulf Coast League. After six games he was promoted to the Bluefield Blue Jays of the rookie-level Appalachian League. In 59 games he hit .369 with two home runs, 15 doubles and six triples. He drove in 31 runs, scored 73 times and stole 21 bases.
Stevenson started the 2019 season with the Dunedin Blue Blue Jays of the Hi-A Florida State League. After 90 games he was traded to the Houston Astros and was sent to the Fayetteville Woodpeckers of the Hi-A Carolina League. Between the two clubs he played in 113 games and hit .288 with five home runs, five triples and 19 doubles. He stole 13 bases, drove in 59 and scored 77 times.
Prior to the 2021 season he was traded again to the Tampa Bay Rays. He spent the season with the Montgomery Biscuits of the AA South League. In 94 games he hit .254 with a career-high nine home runs and 41 RBI. He stole 17 bases and had 15 doubles.
Stevenson started the 2022 season with the Durham Bulls of the AAA International League. After playing in 57 games in Durham he was traded to Oakland and was assigned to the Las Vegas Aviators of the AAA Pacific Coast League.
Prior to his call-up to the Athletics, Stevenson had played in 73 games between Durham and Las Vegas. He was hitting .275 with five home runs and 15 stolen bases. In his major league debut against the Angels, Stevenson started the game in centerfield and went 1 for 3 at the plate with a run scored.
