Panel Discussion on Art Biennials
Thursday, Dec. 2, 6pm, Duluth Art Institute
Venice has one, Sao Paulo has one, Berlin has one, and so does the Duluth Art Institute. The Arrowhead Regional Biennial has been around since 1919 – longer than most of the over 60 biennials now gracing the globe. While the style, motivation, medium, and content of the region’s artwork has changed a bit since 1919, the purpose still remains a way to highlight trends and developments in the visual arts of the upper Midwest.
This year, 47 artists have been selected by Biennial Juror Paula Brandel, director at the MacRostie Art Center. A panel discussion will be held at 6 PM on Dec. 2 in the Depot, consisting of our juror: Paula Brandel, Jennifer Web, Art History professor at University of Minnesota Duluth, as well as winning artist from the 2010 Arrowhead Biennial. The panelists will speak to the role and practice of biennial exhibitions and how the Arrowhead Regional Biennial plays an important part in our area’s cultural landscape.
