Duluth’s 290 licensed foster homes were falling short of meeting the need 50 years ago. The June 18, 1971 Duluth Herald reported “a crucial situation,” in which “good kids” wound up in detention centers for lack of foster homes.

• The second Trans-Superior Race, billed as the world’s longest fresh-water sailboat race, will include two boats from Duluth and one from Grand Rapids. The race covers more than 500 miles from Sault Ste. Marie to Duluth and features 14 boats. The Duluth entries are Jack Soetebier and Howard Jacobs, and Drs. J. M. Streitz and M. M. Fifield. The Grand Rapids entry is Harold Zigmund. All were in the inaugural race two years ago.
• The controversial theater production Hair might be coming to Duluth in October. Four performances have been scheduled, but the show’s producers are looking for assurances from the city attorney that no attempts will be made to block the show.
• A group of Duluth and Cloquet youths who call themselves the Head of the Lakes Repertory Theater is getting standing ovations for its production of Jesus Christ Superstar. The group dances the entire opera to the sounds of a two-record album. No one sings because of a court injunction brought by the copyright holders of the opera.

Caption: Big Tank … This storage tank, which will contain 100 tons of liquid carbon dioxide, is the final major element of a new freezer system that will enable Jeno’s Inc. to increase its Snack Tray production by 3,500 pounds per hour, and make more freezer capacity available for frozen pizza products. Carbon dioxide is the freezing agent, holding temperatures 80 to 100 degrees below zero. The tank was put into place Thursday at Jeno’s Railroad Street plant.
