Postcard from the Aerial Bridge in 1909
This postcard was mailed 110 years ago today — Dec. 9, 1909. It shows the Aerial Transfer Bridge during the days when a ferry car transported people, automobiles and goods across the Duluth Shipping Canal.
Note the card erroneously refers to the location as “Superior, Wis.” The card is also postmarked (on the back) as sent from Superior, so it’s likely versions of the card sold in Superior were specially marked with more concern for selling cards than presenting factual information.
Ferry service on the Aerial Bridge ended on July 1, 1929. After that the iconic structure was transformed into a lift bridge.
On the backside of the card, Artie and Jack want Mrs. John Hagancamp of Marshalltown, Iowa to know they are having a good time.
