Edgewater Motel was built as a 15-unit structure in the early 1950s by Donald Bellows Sr. and Donald Bellows Jr. It has expanded numerous times since then. A second building, Edgewater West Motel, opened one block away on June 23, 1969. The western building was later renamed Edgewater Express, and in 2012 joined the Days Inn franchise, becoming Days Inn Lakewalk Duluth.
The original Edgewater became the Edgewater East Motel after the 1969 expansion. The next major change came in 1990 when more rooms were added, along with a recreation atrium that included a pool and other amenities.
The 35,000-square-foot indoor water park dubbed “The Edge” opened in December 2005.
Both the Edgewater and Days Inn are owned by ZMC Hotels, a hospitality company established by Duluth’s Goldfine family. ZMC was sold in 2015 to California-based Hall Equities Group. ZMC has more than 30 hotels and developments across 10 states, including the Inn on Lake Superior in Duluth.
