There’s a show currently hanging at Blacklist, photography all shot on film by area photographers. The pieces come from members of the Duluth and Northern Minnesota Film Photographers, a group that meets monthly to discuss the process, challenges and variations of shooting on film. The evening will be both a reception for the show and one of the monthly meet-ups.

The show includes images shot on 35mm, medium format, and also some work shot on an 8×10″ film. Kip Praslowicz is one of the organizers and the man behind and under the cloth of that 8 x 10 camera. He is quoted in the placard at the front of the bar introducing the show, “While digital photography is king, seeing the activity and youth present in Duluth and Northern Minnesota Film Photographers group and throughout the world gives me confidence that the medium will be around for enthusiasts for years to come.”

Many of the photographers use cameras that are decades old. The group serves to give and get advice on working with the cameras, processes and resources that have become harder to find. Meetings are held at local breweries, and include a shooter’s show and tell of recent work and gear. Planning and ongoing discussion happens via a Facebook group – Duluth and Northern Minnesota Film Photographers.

If you’re interested in the mechanics and science of photography beyond megapixels and SD cards, don’t be intimidated by the gadgets and processes of the past. It’s a very welcoming group. Dan Pugleasa, another founder and organizer says, “Anyone is welcome. I’m just glad we have other people around here who are passionate about photography but humble. Willing to each learn and teach each other new things. That’s all I wanted in this group and they have exceeded my expectations. I love it.”

The meeting and reception are Thursday August 23, Blacklist, 120 E Superior St starting at 6:30 pm.
