Public input sought on Duluth Traverse mini-master plan

Duluth-Traverse-Trail

The city of Duluth is compiling comments for the draft Duluth Traverse Trail Management and Mini-Master Plan and is seeking input on expanded mountain bike trail offerings with a goal of 100 miles of trails, bike skills park construction sites and improved/expanded neighborhood trail access and facilities such as expanded parking, showers and signage.

A project overview with links to interactive maps and other details is available at duluthmn.gov. The Social Pinpoint interactive map comment tool, open until April 4 at midnight, is at mysocialpinpoint.com.

The next meeting will be an open house prior to the Parks & Recreation Commission special meeting on Tuesday, April 11, at a location and time yet to be determined. At that meeting the draft plan will be presented to the Parks Commission and additional comments will be accepted before the plan is finalized at the end of April.

The Duluth Traverse is a multi-use trail system linking neighborhoods and people to parks and green spaces. It stretches the entire ridgeline of Duluth, from Lester Park in the east to Chambers Grove in the west. The single-track, natural surface trail will be the first 100-mile trail system built for mountain bikes in an urban environment.

Although purpose-built for mountain biking, the Duluth Traverse is intended to be multi-use and open to all human-powered users. Besides mountain biking, trail uses include running, hiking and dog walking in the summer, and fat tire biking, snowshoeing and backcountry skiing in the winter months. This has been a shared vision between the city of Duluth and the Cyclists of Gitchee Gumee Shores. Major completed sections include, but are not limited to, Lincoln Park, Woodland and Observation Hill neighborhoods, as well as segments through Hartley Park, Brewer Park, Lester Park and Spirit Mountain Recreation Area.
