Cross City Trail Master Plan

RCC LogoInterested in connecting the Lakewalk with the Munger Trail? Now is the time to give your thoughts on which route or combination of routes you like for the West Duluth segment. The city has four routes for you to comment on. Visit the Cross City Trail website and take the survey.

The Trails/Parks Committee of the River Corridor Coalition has videos of the entire river route broken into seven segments, along with an interactive map to help identify where the segments are. Visit crosscitytrailduluth.com to check it out. This is the lesser known route that is harder to find and understand, so be sure to check it out.

The city wants your input, so go to the survey and participate. This is a regionally significant trail connection, connecting two great state trails, the Munger Trail and Gitchi-Gami Trail. When all is complete you can go from Hinckley to the Canadian border.

Sure, in a car. Do you think the section of the Gitchi-Gami State Trail from Silver Bay to Schroeder will be finished in my lifetime? I'm 50-ish.

I share a bit of Niff Bimrod's pessimism, but I think I'm on the verge of getting interested in this again.

If you follow some of the recommended links at the bottom of the post, it reveals that I was among the most excited people in town when the Cross City Trail planning kicked in six years ago. When the process got jammed up by the railroad, paper mill and power company, I lost some enthusiasm. Then, when the alternate plans were laid out, the combination of less exciting route options and rancorous public meetings led me to just stop paying attention for a while.

I'm almost back to a mental state where I can start following the process again. These things seldom come easy. The trail might not end up ideal or happen quickly, but six years ago it was just a dream, so we're getting somewhere.
