I’m just about to move to Duluth …

… and I’m gonna have about two weeks of free time to just waste away. What are some things I need to go and check out?

thank you, I can't wait to get up there!

If I may state the obvious, Bentleyville. You could sit down, toast some marshmallows and do some people-watching.

piffmop

I like marshmallows and all, but how's eating going to help me?

Barrett Chase

Which weeks will you be free? Knowing will help people give more specific advice.

The Superior Hiking Trail. It's all nice, but I really like anywhere West of Enger Tower.

Fitgers Brewhouse beer.

Calk

Chester Park, hike up from 4th to the bridge (where 9th turns into 8th), walk up 8th, and reward yourself at Chester Creek Cafe before proceeding onward.

piffmop

This is all great, I liked fitger's beer last time I had it but, I really liked the german place near that whole complex. I'm going to be in duluth next Monday and then that's when those two weeks kick in before the restuarant opens. Ha, so maybe three weeks of free time!

zra

german place?

sir ben's?

Barrett Chase

My first thought was the Pickwick.

piffmop

I think that's the place. Thank you ,so far this list is just what I was looking for. You see, I'm a single guy so I've got to come up with my own ideas, outside of vegging out or playing the hell out of some videogames.

Run/walk one one of various awesome trails. Or if you have a road bike/mountain bike, ride. Or, if we finally get some snow, ski.

Calk

Walk or bike the Lakewalk if it's not too cold.

Midi Restaurant bills itself as a German restaurant -- the restaurant where Bennett's used to be, in the hotel part of Fitger's.

My favorite weekend night activity is to go to the Inn on Lake Superior in Canal Park, act like I'm staying there, and get in on the free 'smore action on the patio.

vicarious

1. You have to be 65 years old to enter Midi.

2. Slowly disassemble and destroy your video games.

3. Out of curiosity, what restaurant opening are you referring to?

4. A couple of us are going to move the Lift Bridge over to the Wisconsin Canal. We could use some help...hint, hint.

zra

-snowshoe the lakewalk after a blizzard.
-snowshoe the lakewalk during a blizzard.
-snowshoe chester creek after a blizzard.
-snowshoe to Carmody during a blizzard.

vicarious...you know where to find me. i'm down with helpin out. i know a guy with a truck who might help out.

piffmop

Vicarious, as sarcastic as this may sound, I'd honestly love to help you move a bridge! I've never done that before, ha. I'll be in town next week.

With two weeks I would for sure take a day to head to Lester River and hike and then head up to Split Rock to hike. I would spend some time at Amazing Grace in Canal Park. I would also check out what music is happeining at Pizza Luce, Sacred Heart Music Center and Beaner's.

piffmop

Man, this is all great stuff! Does the Pizza Luce in duluth have the same weekend hours as the Pizza Luce in downtown mpls?

PJ

Not sure where you're coming FROM, but I'd recommend a drive up the North Shore, a visit to Split Rock Lighthouse, a dinner at Lemon Wolf Cafe in Beaver Bay, a slice of pie at Betty's Pie (the coffee there is horrid, though) and then back to Duluth. Climb to the top of Enger Tower, visit the shops in Canal Park, hope to see a foreign ship going through the canal, maybe have dinner at Grandma's or Lake Avenue Cafe (which probably has a new name by now) and walk around downtown to people watch. You never know what you'll see. Welcome to Duluth! (Home of my heart.)

adam

Until 1:30AM during the week. 2:30AM on weekends.

Paul Lundgren

I think the best first-thing-to-do is Enger Tower. From up there you'll get a good lay of the land.

The Superior Hiking Trail through Duluth is also a great way to get a good sense of what Duluth has to offer, but it's not something you can do in a single day unless you're a marathon athlete. But it's easily divided up into small hikes.

The main thing about Duluth, though, is that you can feel like you know the place after a few months, but you'll keep discovering new things about it constantly.

Ed Zachary

Fitgers, Thirsty Pagan Brewing (Superior), and The Anchor (also Superior) are all great places for food and drinks. The Zinema located downtown is also a cool new place for movies.

piffmop

I've heard about that place before.

Ramos

There's a big raccoon that hangs out on West Third Street, directly below the power lines coming down from Enger Tower. You might see him at dusk.

Malko

Don't wait. Just hang yourself now.

piffmop

Really? I had a pretty sweet deal going on though....

Check out 222 E. Superior Street while you are here! The Zeitgeist Arts building has the Teatro Zuccone live theatre (currently showing a hilarious sketch comedy holiday show and improv every Fri at 10:30 PM) The Zinema independent movie theatres (also showing midnight movies) and the Zeitgeist Arts Cafe (yummy cuisine). Welcome to town! Have fun!

Ruthie

The Scenic Cafe on the old North Shore road, Lake Avenue Cafe in the Dewitt Seitz building (but I haven't been there since the ownership change), At Sara's Table on 9th street....great breakfast's and they cook with really good ingredients. Russ Kendall's smoked fish house in Knife River, Hacienda Del Sol on Superior Street for cheap mexican. Bixby's in Mount Royal shopping area for bagels and coffee. Dunn Brother's on London Road. Someone else already mentioned Beaner's in West Duluth....definately a good cup of coffee and light fare food.

piffmop

thank you very much! This stuff is great.

zra

The Hacienda is good for CaliMex, but way too much cheese to be truly authentic...for the authentic mexico...maya across from the mall.

edgeways

Mexico Lindo in Cloquet

zra

Lindo, I've heard, is tops. haven't been to find out for myself.

maya has the finest fajitas north of the (TX/OK) Red River.

piffmop

Yeah, I've been to that socialist styled burrito place and the Hacienda they were both good. But, Lindo is the place to be?

Calk

Lindo is great, I grew up in Cali, and Lindo is the most authentic to me. Hacienda is like Mexican McDonalds. And Piffmop? Don't waste your time on Danny does Duluth --seriously. Big yawn, and 30 minutes of your life you will never have back.

adam

Keep an eye out for shit sheets and basement shows.

edgeways

really Zra you haven' been to Lindo? I'm moderately shocked. Doing anything Weds or Fri for lunch?

piffmop

Ok, so after moving in, imma gonnas goes to linda!

Terry G

Just gotta say the cafe at Zeitgeist has totally changed my dining habits!Every time I've eaten there, I leave elated that I live in this town.

piffmop

That's really a huge deal Terry, I must check it out.

Danny G

Thanks for the plug, calk.

I would like to also recommend Maya up by the mall. It's sort of a pain in the ass trying to figure out how to actually get there these days, but the chow is good.

cando

I kind of think it's hilarious how people are freaking out about the Zeitgeist cafe.
"Oh my God! A mussel!"

zra

edge: unfortunately, i'll be working. i'm totally down with going on a weekend?

Calk

Terry G, try the walleye sandwich at Zeitgeist, if you haven't already. OMG. Fabulous. I love that place. And the artwork on the walls -- the best artists in town are well represented there, including the brilliant TimK's equally brilliant spouse.

Calk

Danny, let me give you some constructive criticism: less humming and hawing and "ummmmm, ummmmmmmm, ummmmmmm" would go a longgggggggg way. Don't quit your day job (if you have one, that is). But I do like the song that you use to intro the show.

Danny G

Calk...way to stay on topic. Anywho, thatnks for the advise. Of course, it's the same thing you've said about me/my podcast many times before in other online comments. It's very strange how you repeat yourself so often in the local blog-o-sphere. It's like you have virtual Tourettes or something.

Anyway, back on topic...another recommendation I would like to make is the new Zinema2 movie theater downtown. They've had so far a great line-up of new films that we don't normally get around here. Plus, the "classics" they've been playing are terrific choices. And...beer.

piffmop

Does the zinema serve beer durning the movie/s?

Danny G

Yes indeed they do.

Barrett Chase

There's quite a selection in cans, in bottles, and on tap. You can even get Surly Furious, which is awesome. I'm not sure of the prices, but there are frequently $2 PBR specials, and there's some deal where you can get something like 5 or 6 bottles in a bucket of ice.

Danny G

Downing a few Blue Moons in a (plastic) glass while watching the extended edition of Alien on a big screen made for a pretty pleasant Sunday for me a few weeks ago.

Terry G

Cando: Zeitgiest has a great curry sauce - the mussels are just one thing there that I guess folks must rave about to you. I had the rice bowl and flourless chocolate cake there the other night and the cake reminded me of the old Table of Contents in St. Paul. Good stuff!

piffmop

This I'm gonna check this place out today! Thank you.

Calk

@Terry G, you are so right about that curry sauce! Made me want to skip the mussels and just spoon some curry sauce into my mouth. I hear the rice bowls are also terrific. I just love the vibe there. We were there the other night, knew half the people at the bar. Went to Blackwater across the street afterwards, and knew nobody. Where do the people who frequent Blackwater come from anyways?

cando

Do you really think Zeitgeist is really all that better than, say, the Scenic? Or many other restaurants in Duluth? Yes, it is lovely and tasty and inviting and of course it is a fantastic addition to Superior Street, but I've eaten there a few times now and wasn't totally blown away, and yes, I had THE MUSSELS with the OH-MY-GOD Curry sauce. Even my boyfriend who will eat anything gave the whitefish sandwich a, "Meh. It was good." And our server was totally confused. About many things. But who am I to be a Grinch? I'm happy it's there, I've just never heard such lavish praise come from Duluthians. You'd think you'd all been eating at Burger King.
Oh never mind. I just think it's funny. The reviews online too; you guys just LOOOVE this place. That's good, that's good.

Sala Thai up in Woodland. Best tasting food in this town by far.
