Duluth 2024 Primary Election Primer
The filing period for candidates running for federal, state and county offices in Minnesota is from May 21 to June 4. The primary election is Aug. 13; the general election is Nov. 5.
Minnesota’s presidential primary was held in March. Joe Biden won the Democratic-Farmer-Labor party race, Donald Trump won the Republican race and Krystal Gabel won the Legal Marijuana Now race. Other parties could also field presidential candidates in the general election, and independent candidates could emerge.
There are no city of Duluth or Duluth School Board races.
The primary features federal and state offices in which voters must choose a party and vote for the same party in all races. One can’t, for example, vote for a Republican congressman and a DFL senator. St. Louis County offices and judicial races, however, are nonpartisan.
Below are the candidates who filed before the June 4 deadline for offices relevant to Duluth ballots. Candidates who are unopposed will not appear on the primary ballot and advance to the general election. Similarly, nonpartisan races with two candidates will not appear on the primary ballot; both candidates advance to the general election.
