Duluth Boat Club racers trained on Shredded Wheat Biscuit
The Duluth Boat Club Eight Oared Crew won the Senior Eight Oared Race in the Northwestern International Regatta at St. Paul in July 1913 — 110 years ago — according to this Shredded Wheat Company advertisement.
Coach James E. Ten Eyck gave credit for the victory where he apparently thought it was due:
Shredded Wheat is no doubt the most nutritious, strength-building food on the market today, and I want to take this opportunity to inform you of my high regard for it as a muscle-builder and wonderful supplier of nerve force. The oarsmen of the Duluth Boat Club Rowing Crew (photograph of which I am sending you) trained principally on Shredded Wheat Biscuit.
Shredded Wheat has been a big food item in my family for years. My father, James A. Ten Eyck, used it during the years he was actively engaged in rowing, and at the present time insists that it be on the table of every meal for the Syracuse University Crews on which he is now the Rowing Coach. My brother, E. H. Ten Eyck, the Undefeated ex-Amateur Sculler of the World, uses Shredded Wheat at every meal, and attributes much of his success to this food. Shredded Wheat is not simply a breakfast food; it is a food to be eaten at all meals. The oarsmen of the Duluth Boat Club Crews feel that they owe a great deal to Shredded Wheat, and join me in saying that it is the most wholesome food in the world.
Very truly yours, James E. Ten Eyck, Rowing Coach of the Duluth Boat Club Crews.
