This 1968 Duluth News Tribune photo in a scrapbook from the Archives and Special Collections at UMD’s Kathryn A. Martin Library shows Duluth Mayor Ben Boo with the city’s head librarian, Lucile Roemer, and novelist Margaret Culkin Banning Salsich. Roemer was also Duluth’s first female city councilor in the late 1950s. The caption headline on the photo in the paper was “City Council Thanks Author,” and the caption notes Mayor Boo “presented a copy of a City Council resolution expressing gratitude for (Mrs. Salsich’s) efforts as a 39-year member of the Duluth Library Board.”
