Dan and Joanne Devine, Fall 1947
It’s Homecoming Weekend at the University of Minnesota Duluth, and in the spirit of that we roll out this relic from 1947, supplied by Kristy Roschke, managing director of the News Co/Lab at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. The photo is of her grandparents, Dan and Joanne Devine, partaking in homecoming festivities at UMD. Joanne was homecoming queen; Dan was captain of the football and basketball teams.
“This would’ve been fall of 1947, as my grandma was pregnant with my mom and her twin sister (born March 1948),” Roschke writes.
A product of Proctor High School, Dan Devine was quarterback at UMD, and went on to become head football coach at Arizona State and Missouri before a four-year stint in the NFL as head coach and general manager of the Green Bay Packers. He ended his coaching career with six seasons as head coach at Notre Dame. He was inducted into the UMD Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991.
