Postcards from Duluth’s Shipping Canal
There are a bazillion postcards of the Aerial Lift Bridge and various ships, but in this post the aim is to steer attention more to the shipping canal.
The text on the postcard above, from Gallagher’s Studio of Photography, reads:
Entrance to Duluth, Superior Harbor
Westerly Terminus of St. Lawrence Seaway. Both Pleasure Craft and Giant Freighters pass thru this canal.
The postcard above, also from Gallagher, is very similar, but appears to be shot from a slighly different perspective on a different day.
Gallagher also shot the image above of a large freighter passing through the canal and bridge.
V.O. Hammon Publishing Company is responsible for the “Lighthouse and Duluth Canal During Storm” postcard.
And the last card is from Zenith Interstate News Company circa 1953, depicting the opening of navigation season with the first giant freighter of the season entering the harbor.
