R.I.P. West Duluth Video Vision, Mariner Mall Younkers

Two longtime Twin Ports stores will soon close. Fox 21 reports the West Duluth Video Vision store will close this week. The Duluth News Tribune reports Younkers in Superior’s Mariner Mall will close within 12 weeks.

The Video Vision closure is actually the second time the West Duluth video rental store has ceased operations. In 2010, franchise owner Brian Augustine intended to shut down his West Duluth business when Super One Liquor acquired the store’s longtime location at 210 N. Central Ave. At the same time, the Hollywood Video store in the Denfeld Center also closed. When the opportunity to relocate Video Vision to the Spirit Valley Shopping Center was presented, Augustine opted to carry on, adding six more years to Video Vision’s 35-year history in Duluth.

In the early 1990s, Duluth had more than 20 video rental stores — five of them Video Vision locations. Now there are zero. Technically 8th Street Ice Cream, Movies and Antiques in Lakeside rents movies, but is closed for the season. Assuming it reopens in the spring, Duluth will have one movie rental outlet.

The Video Vision in Superior remains open.

Younkers parent company, Bon-Ton Stores, intends to close 42 stores nationwide. The DNT reports the Superior Younkers employs 33 associates.
