Here’s a glimpse of what the Hunter lifestyle was like five decades ago.
Maroon and Gold Week in Denfeld’s stately auditorium.
Robert Van Kleek served as Denfeld’s sixth principal from 1963 to 1970. He was a Denfeld grad and, as senior class president, actually was part of a group of dignitaries who turned over the first dirt when ground was broken in 1925 to build the new Denfeld High School.
Peering through the microscopes in biology class are Kim Armstrong, Debbie Bodin and Judy Bordson.
Hockey cheerleaders Marilyn Doherty, Mary Crotty, Barbara Kolquist, Peggy Christiansen, Claudia Olson and Diane Ulsrud.
Members of the “A” Debate Team: Debbie Urie, Greg Fox, Sheila Nelson and Marsha Main. In 1974 Fox began a career at the University of Minnesota Duluth, advancing to the position of vice chancellor of finance and operations in 1988. He retired in 2011.
Seniors Ted Peterson, John Logergren, Gary Scanlon and Don Olson ward off a thrust at the Denfeld cage. The Hunter hockey team finished the season with an 18-6 record, defeating Cloquet for the District 26 championship before losing to Hibbing in the Region 7 Tournament.

Claudia Johnson, Jacky Tymchuck and Liz Howard express their hopes on posterboard for a Hunter victory against Central during Maroon and Gold Week. They got their wish; Denfeld edged Central 21-19.
Homecoming King Bob Brooks and Queen Judy Zelenikar as they preside over the dance after the coronation.
Gary Backstrom fires a fastball. The junior ace pitched three of the Hunters last four regular season games — all wins. The team won the District 26 Tournament, then lost to Forest Lake in the Region 7 Tournament.
Leading cast members of “The King and I” were Sandra Brown, Arnelle Thorp, Craig Carlson, Patricia Habolin and Alana Bergquist.

Today we stand in Denfeld’s sheltered halls,
The beauty of the sunset quietly fading behind us;
Tomorrow we stand alone at dawn,
The first rays of pinkish sun dancing on the horizon.
