Video Archive: Insane Clown Posse in Duluth
Crack open a Faygo soda and … do something other than watch this video if you know what’s good for you. Nothing of much interest happens, unless you are enough of a Juggalo that listening to professional wrestler Pat Tanaka talk about the size of Andre the Giant’s penis sounds appealing. Nonetheless, for the purpose of novelty if not entertainment, Perfect Duluth Day presents two segments from the earliest days of video blogging, when the Detroit-based horrorcore duo of Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope brought their Insane Clown Posse to Duluth.
It was Sunday, June 18, 2000, when the rage rappers performed at the Shrine Auditorium, now home to Encounter Skate Park. The clowns were on tour promoting their fifth album, The Amazing Jeckel Brothers. Another Detroit rapper, Esham, opened the show.
The episode above is from the day of the concert; the one below is from the day before, which was also the day of Grandma’s Marathon, although the marathon isn’t referenced. There is little in the first video to even suggest it was shot in Duluth, other than the opening disclaimer and a scene at a nondescript location referred to as “the outbacks of Duluth, Minnesota,” where Shaggy 2 Dope paddles around inside a small watercraft “in the middle of an alligator-infested pond.”
At the opening of the video, Shaggy explains his crew is in Duluth a day early because a show in Sioux Falls, Iowa, was cancelled due to “a big group of fucking religious people” who protested. So he said they came to Duluth early to “hit the casinos and whatnot.”
The two videos appear on this page in reverse chronological order simply because the first Duluth episode (below) is even less interesting than the second (above).
