Video Archive: Duluth East mid-1960s Film

A previous Video Archive segment featured a 1956 film from the Mark Bruzonsky collection. This time we skip ahead to the mid-1960s and his years at Duluth East High School.

A Rough Timeline
0:22 East Greyhounds football vs. Denfeld Hunters at Public Schools Stadium (probably fall 1964)
0:56 Advanced physics class
3:36 Debate trip to St. Olaf College
9:51 Play-acting in car as if lost
10:54 Class trip stop at Cassidy’s Gold Pine Restaurant in Hinckley
11:34 Class trip to Walker Art Center in Minneapolis
12:46 Graduation commencement ceremony, June 1965
13:36 Debate team outing at Gooseberry Falls State Park
16:29 Silver Bay

A few notes from Bruzonsky:

  • The physics teacher also flew fighter jets from the airbase. One of the students Bruzonsky remembers is Larry Bowman.
  • The debate team members on the outing to Gooseberry Falls and Silver Bay with Bruzonsky are Paul Tamminen, Mike Zlonis and Phil Garon. They were regional champions, winning every debate that season, except the final one to Edina.

Bruzonsky will be in Minneapolis Nov. 22-29 and says he’d be available Nov. 27 or 28 to travel to Duluth to speak if any organizations are so inclined.

“As the speeches on my website (markbruzonsky.com) indicate, I’d most like to talk about U.S. policies in the Middle East, what really happened on 9/11, and my own more than 100 trips to the region and beyond,” he says.
