Popular Minneapolis chef will open resort restaurant in Pengilly

Sarah MasterSarah Master has announced she will leave her position as executive chef at Minneapolis’ Café Barbette to open a restaurant and resort 75 miles outside of Duluth in the Iron Range city of Penguilly. Her partner in the venture is Dan Beckwith, who had been working as the financial controller of Bryant-Lake Company.

Mr. Roberts Resort is expected to open on June 1 at 28179 East Shore Drive. A news release announcing the plans refers to it as “a unique combination of a full-service restaurant, bar, cabins and RV sites, all situated in a bucolic setting on Swan Lake in Northern Minnesota.”

The 90-seat restaurant promises a “supper club-style setting with a contemporary feel, serving up modern Midwestern cuisine” such as macaroni and cheese-stuffed meatloaf, smelt fries, venison stroganoff, lamb bacon BLT and items smoked in an old-world brick smokehouse. Some menu items will be available as grab-and-go for boaters. There will also be full bar with “classic cocktails and an eclectic, yet affordable wine list.”

Master is a Pengilly native who started cooking professionally in her early 20s. After stints at the Ritz-Carlton and Bayona in New Orleans’ French Quarter she moved back to Minnesota, cooking at several James Beard-winning restaurants around the Twin Cities until she landed the job heading up the kitchen at Barbette, a French bistro in the Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis. In 2014 she was a semi-finalist on ABC’s cooking show The Taste.
