R.I.P. DNT

RIP DNT

Don’t worry, the Duluth News Tribune is still a thriving enterprise and the sign on the back of the building is holding strong. The visibility of the sign, however, is slowing diminishing as the future Maurices headquarters climbs skyward.

The view from the break room is about to get a lot worse, too.

My desk was one that faced the harbour, on the first floor. Worked 31 years there with some nice folks, artists Jill Bugbee, Murial Policka, Marge Eneroth, Joan Vukovich and myself along with Tom Morgan, Cindy Finch, Jan Thompson and others in marketing. Those were the Knight Ridder happier days of a sort.

An unfortunate casualty of the otherwise encouraging development going on downtown. It's a shame that (1) the burned-out lights of that neon Duluth News Tribune sign were never replaced to begin with, and (2) the DNT's visible presence as drivers entered downtown on I-35 is now forever lost. Back when it was fully lit, that sign was a source of pride for those of us who worked there.
