This Week: the mayor, mustaches, meals and more

Untitled design
Here’s a bit of what you’ll find on this week’s PDD Calendar:

Mayor Ness’ final State of the City Address is taking place, wooden cars are pitted against each other in the latest Pinewood Derby, Restaurant Week gets underway with meals aplenty and the Zinema’s 2sDays series kicks into gear.

Grab some new jewelry at St. Luke’s, acquire Mary Bue’s latest album at her release show, see the classic musical Oliver!, take in some of the best jazz the area has to offer at the Head of the Lakes Jazz Festival and celebrate Mustache March.

Lots to do, and then some.

shakespeare folio

Here's a future event for Shakespeare geeks:

UMD has been selected as one of 53 host sites for First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare, a national traveling exhibition of the first collected edition of Shakespeare's plays. The book was published in 1623, seven years after his death. It's going on tour in 2016.

A news release from UMD External Affairs notes:

Krista Sue-Lo Twu, associate professor and head of the English department, and library director Matthew Rosendahl led the effort to get the First Folio to Duluth, with museum director Ken Bloom agreeing to host the exhibit in the Tweed Museum of Art. They canvassed organizations for programming partners and produced 35 letters of support, everyone from Duluth Mayor Don Ness to Alan Sparhawk of the indie rock band Low.
It is believed that 750 copies of the First Folio were printed, and there are 233 known copies in the world. The Folger Shakespeare Library holds 82 copies. A First Folio sold for $6.2 million in 2001 at Christie's and another one for $5.2 million in 2006 in London. It originally sold for one British pound (20 shillings) — about $200 today. The touring dates for First Folio will be announced in April.

Update from the UMD Department of Music:

We regret to inform that the Tom Harrell concert scheduled for Friday, March 6, at Weber Music Hall has been canceled. After bad weather caused an airliner to skid off the runway at La Guardia airport in NYC, the airport was closed by the FAA. The group's flights out of New York were cancelled, and although they were continuously re-booked throughout the day and evening, their Friday flights have been cancelled as well. We apologize for the inconvenience and are disappointed at not being able to bring this performance to our community this weekend. Ticket fees will be refunded. At this time, the concert has not been rescheduled. The remainder of the UMD Department of Music's 42nd Annual Head of the Lakes Jazz Festival will continue as planned.
