What else is Duluth the best at?

Duluth won Outside magazine’s online poll for “Best Place to Live,” — also referred to frequently as “Best Outside City” or “Best Outdoors Town.” Whatever it’s called, Duluth won it.

From Medscape:

Best Place to Practice Medicine - Great Lakes and North Central Small Town: Duluth, Minnesota Duluth was named the worst city for recruiting physicians and surgeons last year by Wanted Analytics, largely because it has a shortage of physicians. What's it doing on our list? Duluth's low physician density means that physicians can command higher salaries than in saturated markets, says Merritt Hawkins recruiter Troy Fowler. Because they're practicing in a mini-metro area in a remote location, physicians in Duluth can practice to the full extent of their training but still have access to a full range of medical resources, including a level II trauma center, a vascular institute, a regional neuroscience center, and a state university. Taxes are high in Minnesota, but you get something for your money: The state has the highest high-school graduation rate in the country. Yes, Duluth winters are brutal, but the city's airport offers direct flights to Florida.

I once read somewhere that we have the most green-space per capita than any other city in the lower 48, but a quick google says we're "among the cities with the most" green space. Oh well. That sounds kind of lame comparatively.

I definitely, in my own anecdotal poll, consider Duluth to be the best at complaining about ... oh, pretty much everything.

I'm pretty sure this means I fit right in.

Weird. Based on how everyone I know actually lives, Duluth is America's best indoor city.

"At the turn of the 20th century, [Duluth MN] boasted more park land and green space, per capita, than any other American city, and offered residents a lifestyle that was incomparable."

-from the book *Duluth, Minnesota* (Images of America) by Maryanne C. Norton and Sheldon T. Aubut

The turn of the 20th century was more than a century ago, however.

"Best Indoor City" came up in a conversation I was in recently and it was concluded Duluth could make a good run at the title. In addition to the Skywalk system protecting Downtown shoppers and professionals from the elements, it must be noted that UMD students could graduate without ever exiting the connected campus buildings.

Also, I'd like to nominate the 300 to 400-block strip of Central Avenue in West Duluth as the America's "Most Fried-Chicken Scented Area." I'm not saying it would win, but it certainly deserves a nomination.

I wonder where Medscape came up with an average home price of $189,700+. Jeez.

For cities of our size, under 100,000, I'd say we have the most vibrant theater community.

Hasn't Duluth been one of the the best in Outside magazine for the last 10 years?

To say to that statement, we have weird and interesting things, but for me it's the food. I've traveled all across the country and couldn't find better beer than at Fitger's, better food than at many establishments, including Fitger's, Duluth Grill, etc. Also, you have to throw in the atmosphere. We have some of the best biking and hiking trails worldwide. I could go on.

For a city of this size, we are also great for day trips. Get in your car, drive two hours, and you can land in Mpls/St Paul for all sorts of music/theater, or Ely/Boundary Waters, Grand Marais, Bayfield/Ashland, power malls down I-35 (if that's your thing) or even another country. Or hop on a plane out of Duluth and land in another state for a day.

If the magazine visited Duluth these last few days they would totally change their minds. After this winter and spring I can't believe even Duluthians would vote for this city. I love it here, but this has been the crappiest weather I can remember.
