This week: Bob, bucking broncos and brews

Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.

Tonight check out local musician Markus J. Dandy’s new open mic at Brewhouse.

On Tuesday, that guy who wrote the new Darius Rucker single “Wagon Wheel” will be performing at Bayfront Festival Park.

Then on Wednesday, shuffle your way to the Endion Station on the Lakewalk for the Sidewalk Shuffle 5K, and raise some money for the Y’s Strong Kids Campaign.

Thursday you’ll have a chance to go to Sacred Heart and yell at Low in person for that 27-minute song they played. Tim Kaiser will be there for moral support. If that’s too controversial for you, the Spooner Rodeo starts the same day.

Friday, explore some art that deals with biology, self, and the past and present. Extinct, Extant is showing at the Prøve.

By Saturday you’ll probably need a drink. Join craft brewers from all over Minnesota for the All Pints North Summer Brew Fest at Bayfront.

Last but not least, Tycoons hosts the Meat Puppets Sunday. Actual Wolf and Enemy Planes open.

So what are you doing this week? Can we tag along? Any upcoming events that you want to promote? Let us know.

Two Duluth Dylan Show Tickets

Two tickets for the July 9 Duluth show and we can’t make it. With silly TicketMaster fees and tax, price is $165. Let me know today or I’ll do the Craigslist thing Monday. Thanks. My cell 349-553six

Video Archive: Bad Company and Damn Yankees at the DECC Arena in 1991

Bad Company played Grand Casino Hinckley last night with Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. Twenty-two years ago, Bad Company toured with Damn Yankees and played the DECC Arena.

The memorable part of the show was that the news came out during the concert that the Gulf War had ended. Ted Nugent celebrated by shooting a cutout of Saddam Hussein with his crossbow. (This seemed spontaneous, but it was actually something he was doing throughout the tour, because he’s Ted Nugent and that’s what he does.)

Dylan tickets

Does anyone want two tickets to the sold out Dylan/Wilco/Morning Jacket/Richard Thompson show in St. Paul, Midway Stadium, Wednesday? They are $80 each, face. Lemme know, asap.

Common Loon Release

This beautiful adult common loon was grounded in a yard down in the Cloquet area. After we checked the bird over and fed it some minnows (thanks to Chalstrom’s Bait Shop for their kind donations!), we released it into Lake Superior down beneath the Lakewalk. The loon was happy to be in the water again! Thanks to Trish for taking these pics, and and to Farzad, Kelly, and Trish for doing the release this evening!

Casa Motel and Duluth Motel History

In a vein somewhat similar to the Ye Olde Corner Grocery post, I recently saw that the Casa Motel is for sale. That shoebox-looking motel has been a curiosity since I was a kid. It had a certain “stigma” about it, but I’ve always wondered, why there? What made someone build a motel there, in 1965?

Bridge Festival schedule confirmed … almost

We know this is ridiculous, but we promise to fit it all in and stay mostly on time. And the forecast is perfect! This schedule includes all the changes, switcharoos, and official times as of noon on the 4th of July (yes, there are still more events in the works we’ll try to update here):

Party Bus Rental

We are needing transportation for our wedding on Aug. 18. We’ll be needing enough room for 35 people, so I am thinking a school bus would be our best option. We’re looking for a ride to our wedding at 4 p.m. and from the wedding at midnight. Any suggestions?

Google Streetview Update

In case anyone is interested, it appears there was recently an update to the Google Streetview images of Duluth and the surrounding area. It looks like it may be from early last fall. Check out if you’ve been inadvertently (or not) immortalized … or just creep on your neighbors.

Rhubarb on Rhubarb on Rhubarb: Chum’s 2013 Rhubarb Festival

You missed out if you weren’t able to make it out to the ninth annual Chum Rhubarb Festival this past Saturday. From rhubarb pies to rhubarb brats, the food pyramid was covered. Musician Charlie Parr headlined the festival with a performance in the afternoon. Here’s a sample of that tasty day!

Crime Increases? Please share your stories

Its been a busy couple of weeks here in Duluth. Last week our house in East Hillside was entered by a stranger who tried to coax us outside for who knows what reason. Last week also brought a terrible gang beating of my girlfriend’s co-worker and a violent mugging on the Lakewalk. This morning on my way to work I was nearly run over in my front yard by a group of police and search dogs. Someone was shot by the co-op a few weeks ago. We know the local news has been trying to put stories together about the increase in crime in Duluth and are being met with silence from law enforcement. It seems terribly unfair to keep neighborhoods in the dark about crime activity in their back yards. Would folks be comfortable sharing what they see and know in this space? Also – does Duluth’s hillside have any organized neighborhood watch programs? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Low – “Do You Know How to Waltz?” (Live at Rock the Garden)

Here it is, the controversial 27-minute song.

Good Asian Food in Duluth

My friend from Chicago is visiting. We used to go to the Lotus Inn. Where should we go now?
