Firebrick?

I’m trying to locate some firebrick in town for an outdoor oven project I’m constructing.  The best kind would be free, but I would be willing to pay a small amount for any straits that you may have laying around from that fireplace project or whatnot.  I can certainly make good use outta used or slightly damaged bricks, granted they have at least one good side that I can put face up.  I have made calls to several places around town, but would really just like to find a person around who has more than they need and wouldn’t mind me taking some (18) off of their hands. I’ll have  you over for pizza when its constructed! Thanks in advance!

Found: Mountain bike in Lakeside

There was a small mountain bike found off of Superior Street near East High School on Tuesday night, June 5. I saw it when I left home, and it was still there when I returned hours later. It was missing the seat post and looked like it has been dumped.  I picked it up, assuming it was stolen. If you lost a mountain bike, or if I inadvertently stole yours, let me know.

Kojak Street?

Group campaigns to get Duluth street named after ‘Kojak’ star Savalas

A push is underway from a group to get a street named after late “Kojak” star Telly Savalas, Minnesota Brown reports.

“Telly Savalas lived in Duluth Mn. Telly Savalas paid taxes in Duluth Mn. Telly Savalas made advertisements for Duluth Mn. Telly Savalas needs a street named after him,” says the Citizens for Telly Savalas Blvd. Facebook page.

Is it over yet?

The new way to follow PDD comments

As you can see by looking at the left sidebar on this page, the old Recent Comments feature has been removed, and a new link for Recent Comments at the top of the page has been added.

There are three old posts (link, link and link) which detail the problems we had with our old Recent Comments feature. We think this latest fix is our best bet.

So, if you like to follow along with new comments to old posts, click the new Recent Comments link and have at them.

Japanese interpreter needed for Twin Ports Bridge Festival

The Twin Ports Bridge Festival is hosting Dr. Masaru Emoto this year. A Japanese interpreter who is familiar with Quantum Physics is needed. Do you fit the criteria or know someone who does? The festival is July 5 and 6. Learn more at TwinPortsBridgeFestival.com. Please contact Jodi Christensen if you are able to help out — jodi @ yoganorthduluth.com.

Superiorites and Pizza Lovers

I’ve asked a few friends and associates about this with unsatisfactory results, so I thought I’d throw it out there for the PDD community to mull over.

In the early 90s (1990-1993), I remember going to a pizza place in Superior, but I can’t remember what it was called. Here’s what I remember about it:

  • It was open late at night.
  • It was kind of grimy and dark inside.
  • It offered a large variety of toppings. For example, I remember getting shrimp and cashews a few times. I think they also offered sauerkraut as a topping.
  • I don’t think it was a chain.

Does anyone remember a restaurant like that?

Curiosity: Mysteries Near Boy Scout Landing

I have a curiosity about the history of our town and the surrounding area, and PDD has been a great source for finding answers and discovering new things. I hope someone can solve these mini mysteries, (at least they’re a mystery to me).

Out by Boy Scout Landing, there is this wedge-shaped foundation, (Search Google Maps for: 46.654688, -92.224903). It looks as if it was some sort of industry long since gone.

Bike Thefts on the East Side

My son’s bike was stolen this weekend. A really nice white-and-black Specialized Hardrock Comp with disc brakes was taken from my back yard. The officer from DPD told me there has been a rash of bike thefts east from 10th Avenue East. I spoke with a pawn shop owner who told me they are often moved out of town to more populated cities to our south. So get ’em locked up and put away or end up like my little-big man who will be mowing lawns for a new one.

This week: folk dancing, chamber music and carnage

Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.

If you’ve been attending the weekly International Folk Dancing on Mondays it’s moving to Temple Israel for the summer. If you haven’t, what are you waiting for?

It’s the beginning of June so why not start planning for next season’s cross-country skiing season? Meet Tuesday at Hartley.

The Three Bridges International Chamber Music Festival has events at Sacred Heart and Weber on Tuesday and Saturday this week and more next week.

It’s live music and fresh produce every Wednesday outside Kirby Center during the summer at the UMD Market Day.

God of Carnage shows how thin civility is at the Duluth Playhouse this Thursday and runs two weekends.

Kirov brings his live comedy talk show from UWS to the Underground on Friday.

Lumpy G and Lawrence Lee are the new quizmasters at the Sunday night Carmody Pub Quiz as John Lee departs. Godspeed, John Lee.

So what are you doing this week? Can we tag along? Any upcoming events that you want to promote? Let us know.

Greenhouse Advice

I’m trying to make my yard and garden more inviting to pollinators, and I’m having trouble finding greenhouses in the Duluth area that don’t treat their flowers with long-lasting systemic insecticides that get into the pollen and nectar. I don’t want to bring flowers and shrubs home that will poison the bees and butterflies I’m trying to attract. Any recommendations for where to get untreated plants locally? I’ve gotten some at Burchfiel’s and some at Boreal Natives, but they don’t have everything I’d like to plant.

First Tick of the Year — 2013 Edition

In addition to misapplied possessive apostrophes and upset people in the newspaper, another thing we’ve been following on PDD for quite some time is the first tick to show its face each year. This little bloodsucker latched on to me today on the Lumber Camp Trail at Pattison Park.
