Looking for candid digital photographers

I’m looking for a few contacts who would be interested in coming to Spirit Mountain on Friday, Oct. 11 to photograph candid photos of my wedding reception.

I’m trying to get contacts of people who live in Duluth who may be interested in finding freelance photography work. The pay is $20/hour.

Home to share

If you are a person who can share a home and share a kitchen, this might be the greatest place. Six-hundred-plus square feet — entire second floor — with shared kitchen and bath. Beautiful views, off-street parking. Asking $500/month. Includes Wi-Fi and all utilities. Already one dog and two cats in residence.

Homegrown Band Publicity Photo Showdown: Charlie Parr vs. Tangier 57

With the Homegrown Music Festival coming up, PDD launched a series of polls two months ago, tournament style, to determine which Duluth-area band has the sweetest pic. It has come down to these two:

Charlie Parr (photo by Peter Lee)

Tangier 57 (photo by Patrice Bradley)

Which band has the better publicity photo?

This poll is now closed. The results were:

Tangier 57 – 59.5 percent
Charlie Parr – 40.5 percent

Tangier 57 is now the reigning publicity photo champion, and will carry the title proudly through Homegrown. In future weeks, title defenses will occur randomly as new band photo contenders emerge.

Note: Only people who are logged in to their Perfect Duluth Day blogging account are allowed to vote (to prevent people from voting multiple times). To create an account, click here. If you need help figuring it out, click here.

This week: gender-swapping Shakespeare and roller derby

Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.

There are Earth Day related activities today down at the Maritime Center in Canal Park.

Do you like beer and movies? Well on Tuesday you can enjoy a beer while watching movies about beer at the Zinema 2. Yeah, they get meta like that.

Coriolana, a gender-swapping version of William Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, opens on Thursday and runs two weekends at UMD.

The Underground, the new venue in the Depot, has its grand opening this Friday and Saturday with music, theater, and a special Nerd Nite presentation.

Saturday night it’s time for roller derby! With your Harbor City Roller Dames taking on the Fargo Moorhead Derby Girls at the DECC with the musical stylings of Big Wave Dave and the Ripples.

And Sunday? Nothing’s happening Sunday. Well, except if you’re interested in this little local music festival that begins then.

So what are you doing this week? Can we tag along? Any upcoming events that you want to promote? Let us know.

Spike, Dakota and Friends of Wildwoods at Blue Lake

Fox21 tells the story:

DULUTH – Some Northlanders celebrated Earth Day, one day early on Sunday, by raising money for Wildwoods. Art for Our Wildwoods kicked off at the Blue Lake Gallery in Canal Park donating 20 percent of the Gallery’s proceeds to the rehabilitation center. “We rescue injured wildlife including lead-poisoned eagles, animals hit by cars, window strikes and we’re also here to educate the public on wildlife issues,” Erica Erickson, vice-chair of the Wildwoods board, said. The event also featured three special guests, a red-tailed hawk, a porcupine and a hognose snake.

The event would not have been possible without the contributions from The Cupcake Lady, Positively Third Street Bakery, Townsquare Media (our radio partners KOOL 101.7), our silent auction partners Applebees, Duluth Grill, Grandma’s, and Cantonese House. Thanks, too, to the immensely hard-working volunteers.

A cautionary tale for Duluth collectives?

Recently in Minneapolis, the Sisters’ Camelot collective faced restrictions in its ability to canvass for donations as the group was no longer listed as a registered nonprofit or charity in Minnesota. It has been told to cease fundraising efforts with a potential $25,000 fine per fund solicitation. The canvass workers unionized and have been calling for collective organizers to step down to restructure in the wake of the mishandling of the collective.

Boston Marathon Tribute Run

The board of directors of the North Shore Striders will dedicate our next group run to those affected by the bombings at the Boston Marathon. We encourage runners and non-runners alike to come out in support for those injured on Monday.  There will be a free-will offering collected at the run that will be sent to the One Fund Boston, Inc. to help those afflicted by the attack. Everyone is encouraged to wear a race shirt or blue and yellow as a visual show of support.

The Run will meet at the Rose Garden parking lot at 6 p.m. on Monday,  April 22, and be approximately 5k.

Duluth’s Lakewalk That Wasn’t

The comments on the recent post about wine rooms as breeding places of vice in Duluth a century ago delved into the history of prostitution in Canal Park. If only someone had come up with the idea for the Lakewalk back then …

This Week in LakeVoice

On Thursday, LakeVoice will release its first ever photo issue. For this issue, LakeVoice staff will go out into the community to capture snapshots of people living their lives in Duluth. The project is inspired by Humans of New York. The goal is to share stories of people’s everyday lives through photos. LakeVoice would like to invite you to join in the project.

Looking for a house in Lakeside/Woodland

My husband and I recently sold our lovely little house in Lakeside, and now we’re looking for a new home. We didn’t expect our house to sell so quickly, and now that it has, we are not finding much on the market! We’re looking for 3-4 bedrooms, nice size yard, and possibly finished basement or space to grow. I thought I’d throw it out here to see if anyone was planning on listing their house soon, as we’re reaching our deadline before we have to decide to rent! Thank you in advance!
