This week: fonts, cats and ides

Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.

Today Sarah Brokke opens a new exhibit at Zeitgeist Arts or you could go to a gallery discussion at the Duluth Arts Institute.

On Tuesday you can get all sans serif at the Zinema 2 with a screening of Helvetica, the last movie in their Gary Hustwit design trilogy.

What should we do with Rockridge Elementary? You can chime in with your ideas on Wednesday in an open meeting at Portman Community Center.

Cats opens at the Duluth Playhouse on Thursday and runs for two weekends. Also opening that night is How I Learned to Drive at UMD and it runs through the end of the month.

Friday is the Ides of March and in Duluth that means a series of concerts where bands pay tribute to their musical influences. The series starts on Friday at Lake Avenue Café and heads to R. T.’s on Saturday and concludes next Friday at Pizza Lucé.

Sunday is St. Patrick’s Day and there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate, including:

So what are you doing this week? Can we tag along? Any upcoming events that you want to promote? Let us know.

Minnesota All Hockey Hair Team 2013

Yes, this weekend marked the crowning moment in Minnesota high school hockey — the opportunity to rank the best flow from the state tourney. Duluth and Hermantown were well represented on 2013 All Hockey Hair Team.

I am so sick of people using Skyline Parkway outlooks as dumpsters…

The latest asshole person to do so? Someone with bundles and bundles of Budgeteer papers and ads that decided to toss them off the overlook (for unknown motives; I’ll keep my hypothesis to myself). As I was walking my dog today I stumbled upon this disgusting site.

Help me smoke meats

I want to build this barrel smoker I found on Reddit, but I don’t know where to find a 55-gallon food-grade drum. Since everyone was very helpful with my sticker question I figured I would tap the PDD well again.

CrossFit Duluth

CrossFit has finally made it to Duluth!

Nice day for a ski …

One might even say “perfect.”

Where in Duluth?

Duluth is where the heart is. Where in Duluth, MN?

Bonus points if you can figure the swatch of land that the heart covers. I’m stumped on the scale there, but at a minimum I’m thinking Proctor and maybe Esko and a township or three.

LakeVoice publishes second issue of spring

LakeVoice After several weeks of preparation, LakeVoice News published its first issue of the semester Feb. 28. The issue features the kickoff of LakeVoice’s Photo-A-Day project, video and audio pieces, and local issues stories produced by UMD journalism students. Since its launch, LakeVoice has published a second issue that includes a “Duluth on Ice” section, which features the history behind area hockey rinks.

Everyone in the arts was out last night

There were openings at Ochre Ghost, Washington Gallery, and Prøve. I spent the night at Prøve listening to Snöbarn.

Local artist is IFP new media finalist

Catherine Meier, new media artist and local filmmaker, is a finalist for the Independent Filmmaker Project New Media Project Grant. Only one of these is awarded for the whole state.

Duluth writing scene

I am interested in looking into and meeting some writers who are either from the Duluth area originally or still live here. Got any ideas?

Hey everyone! Just wanted to say thank you if you helped me find these amazing people! Take a read =)
