UMD journalism students find third places in Duluth

Every year, UMD journalism students in the Reporting and Writing II course head out into Duluth looking for story ideas that they will report and write for LakeVoice News. To start off the semester, reporters are asked to find third places in their beat areas that may lead them to stories. The students chronicled what they found on a website called TwinPorts Third Places.

LakeVoice wants you to share some of your third places. Where do you kick back and unwind in the city of Duluth? Have you been to any of the third places observed by students in this project? Feel free to contribute to the discussion below, or visit this link to find out how you can share your favorite third places with LakeVoice directly.

Ruthie was referring to Memorial Park, which no longer has the airplane. The airplane is in the West Duluth American Legion parking lot now. It was moved in the mid 1990s. It has been featured in two PDD banners.

I scrolled through most of the pages on the blog. It seems this person never got West of the library downtown. (Well, there was a reference to Wade Stadium.) I am not as familiar as I should be with West Duluth but there are "third places" there. What  about Beaner's? What about Clyde Iron? What about Heritage Sports Center? What about the park with the Airplane? (Sorry, I don't know the name I just know I thought it was cool when I went to the Welch Center when I was a kid ... that dates me!) What about the Willard Munger biking trail. How about the Waterfront Trail? Don't get me started about Piedmont!

Well here's an interesting twist. I knew I had a photo somewhere of the airplane being removed from Memorial Park. (I think it's from the fall of 1996.) It appears to be a slightly different airplane.

Lake Voice, investigate immediately! Here's a discussion on warbirdinformationexchange.org about this very topic.

I don't think it's the same plane. Here's another photo of the plane at Memorial Park. Compare it to a higher-res version of the American Legion plane. The nose is totally different. The tail is totally different. The wings are different.  It's pretty odd that one plane was taken down from Memorial and then a different plane was put up a few blocks down the road, but that appears to be the case.

I always thought that the plane from the banner was the one in Proctor at the park near the golf course on Highway 2.

So where is the one from the banner pictures?

The one from the banner is in the American Legion parking lot on Grand Avenue.
