Arrowhead Regional Arts Council Grants
The Arrowhead Regional Arts Council approved on March 15, 2012, grant applications totaling $87,925 to be awarded in Art Project Grants. The funding for these grants is made available by the Minnesota State Legislature and the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008 and an appropriation from the Minnesota State Legislature. The arts organizations funded are as follows:
Prove Gallery – Duluth ($5,000) Prove Gallery will use this grant to produce a ten artist gallery show on April 19, 2012.
Renegade Theater Company – Duluth ($5,000) Renegade Theater Company will use this grant to produce a repertory program of two drafts of the same play by legendary writer Tennessee Williams, “Summer and Smoke” and “The Eccentricities of a Nightingale” in June, 2012.
Lyric Opera of the North – Duluth ($5,000) Lyric Opera of the North will use this grant to produce Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Mikado” on June 21 and 23, 2012.
Lake Superior Chamber Orchestra – Duluth ($4,650) The Lake Superior Chamber Orchestra will use this grant to present a concert event featuring the historic Felgemaker Organ at Sacred Heart Music Center, Duluth, on June 27, 2012.
Sound Unseen – Duluth ($5,000) Sound Unseen will use this grant to produce the Third Annual Duluth/Superior Film Festival from May 31 to June 4, 2012.
Three Bridges International Chamber Music Festival – Duluth ($5,000) Three Bridges International Chamber Music Festival will use this grant to present a free chamber music concert at Sacred Heart Music Center featuring faculty and students of the Three Bridges International Chamber Music festival on June 5, 2012.
Jaques Art Center – Aitkin ($5,000) Jaques Art Center will use this grant to support twelve months of exhibitions, programming and workshops.
Grand Marais Playhouse – Grand Marais ($5,000) The Grand Marais Playhouse will use this grant to hire a fight choreographer for its production of “The Beaux’ Stratagem,” a Restoration comedy adapted by Ken Ludwig and Thorton Wilder from George Farquahar, and stage a combat workshop for the community.
The College of St. Scholastica – Duluth ($5,000) The College of St. Scholastica will use this grant to present a performance of ethnic/jazz world music band, Red Baraat, during February, 2013, at Mitchell Auditorium.
Arrowhead Chorale – Duluth ($5,000) Arrowhead Chorale will use this grant to produce a full performance of a choral and orchestral masterwork in May, 2013.
Poetry Harbor – Duluth ($5,000) Poetry Harbor will use this grant to present ten writing workshops at the CHUM Center in Duluth and publish a book of the poetry written by the participants.
Edge of the Wilderness Community Center – Bigfork ($5,000) Edge of the Wilderness Community Center will use this grant to present Stages Theatre Company of Hopkins performing the musical, “Seussical” on July 13, 14, and 15, 2012.
Duluth Festival Opera – Duluth ($5,000) Duluth Festival Opera will use this grant to produce two performances of “LaTragedie de Carmen” a fully staged adaptation of Bizet’s “Carmen,” by Sir Peter Brook on October 5 and 7, 2012.
Magic Smelt Puppet Troupe- Duluth ($5,000) Magic Smelt Puppet Troupe will use this grant to produce the Smelt Run Parade, a non-motorized, join in parade on Duluth’s Lakewalk, featuring giant puppets, masqueraders and a brass band on April 21, 2012.
North Shore Music Association – Grand Marais ($5,000) North Shore Music Association will use this grant to present “The Crown Prince of Zydeco,” C.J. Chenier and The Red Hot Louisiana Band, in concert at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts on June 9, 2012.
Bayfront Reggae/World Music Festival – Duluth ($3,275) Bayfront Reggae/World Music Festival will use this grant to present the 7th Annual Bayfront Reggae and World Music Festival which provides cultural entertainment through reggae and world music at Bayfront Park on July 14 and 15, 2012.
WTIP North Shore Community Radio – Grand Marais ($5,000) WTIP North Shore Community Radio will use this grant to produce a two-day music festival to bring together an eclectic mix of North Shore bands and showcase their art on September 8 and 9, 2012.
Northern Lights Music Festival – Aurora ($5,000) Northern Lights Music Festival will use this grant to create a new production of Leoncavallo’s opera, “Pagliacci,” with a 1915 Iron Range setting on July 13, 14 and 15, 2012.
