Nerdigras

It was a duel for the ages, but eventually, my light sabre sliced off Steve Farnham’s metaphorical hand in the Spelling Bee at Nerd Nite Duluth, at the Zuccone.

The qualifying round, designed by Lawrence Scott Lee…

LSL

…was a tough one.

Spelling Bee

… with no one scoring better than 70%.

The overall Nerd Nite vibe was a little more chill than in past nights — the Nerdigras drink special putting an absinthe vibe to the place. But it was amazing fun.

Thanks to these nerds:

The third one who pretended to be old enough to see Star Wars in the 1970s.

I never realized before that being old enough to have seen Stars Wars when it came out made a person cool. Wow. I'm cool. This is a first.

No one is "cool" at Nerd Nite.

Carla, *I* think you and I are cool for having seen Star Wars when it first came out in 1976. It's one of those movies, I remember exactly who I saw it with (Carolyn Hoff) and where (San Jose, CA), and how it blew my uncluttered teenage mind. Crystal's generation has no equal, that's why she had to pretend to have been old enough to see it way back when.

Ahem. It came out in 1977. May 25, 1977 to be exact. A date revered by nerds everywhere.

Thanks Lars for the correct date!

Paul Lundgren was at Nerd Nite, and I met him for the first time. While still a giant of a Duluthian, he's also a comfortable handshake.

For those who can't read the graphic of the spelling bee words, here is a link to a larger version.

"The third one who pretended to be old enough to see Star Wars in the 1970s." That line just pushed me to send the $16 to AARP. At least I'll get some discounts....

My mom let me go see Star Wars, but she would not let me go see Jaws. Her mistake haunts me to this day.

Star Wars was the first PG movie my parents let me see.
