In January, 2012, the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council awarded grants totaling $31,732 in the McKnight/ARAC Individual Artist Career Development Grants Program. The funding for these grants is made available with money from the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008, The McKnight Foundation and an appropriation from the Minnesota State Legislature.

Ryuta Nakajima – Duluth ($2,500) Mr. Nakajima will use this grant to travel to Toyama Prefecture, Japan, to conduct experiments and produce a photo/video work on the illusive deep-sea firefly squid.

Kristina Estell – Duluth ($2,500) Ms. Estell will use this grant to participate in an exhibition and portfolio exchange at the “Navigating Currents” Southern Graphics Council International conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, in March, 2012.

Kenneth Marunowski – Esko ($2,500) Mr. Marunowski will use this grant to exhibit his work at the Duluth Art Institute, the Lake Avenue Restaurant and Bar, and Amazing Grace in Duluth, and to participate in a week-long Plein Air Painting Competition held in Grand Marais, MN, in the Fall of 2012.

Elizabeth James – Duluth ($2,300) Ms. James will use this grant to prepare her work for an exhibition at the Thornhill Gallery, located at Avila University, Kansas City, MO, from March 9 to April 27, 2012.

Cody Myers – Duluth ($2,500) Mr. Myers will use this grant to prepare his work for an exhibition at the Ochre Ghost Gallery in downtown Duluth in October, 2012.

Wendy Savage – Duluth ($2,500) Ms. Savage will use this grant to prepare a series of narrative artwork for exhibition, based on her recovery process from ovarian cancer.

Andrew Floberg – Duluth ($2,500) Mr. Floberg will use this grant to prepare new work for an exhibition at the Washington Gallery in Duluth during the month of July, 2012.

Emma Rustan – Duluth ($2,500) Ms. Rustan will use this grant to prepare her work for an exhibition with another local artist at the Washington Gallery in Duluth during the month of June, 2012.

Barbara Johnson – Grand Marais ($2,500) Ms. Johnson will use this grant to create and produce a CD of original songs.

Darin Bergsven – Duluth ($2,500) Mr. Bergsven will use this grant to record a CD of his solo repertoire and perform a concert at Sacred Hear Music Center, Duluth, in July, 2012.

Danielle Sosin – Duluth ($2,500) Ms. Sosin will use this grant to fund a three-week book tour to promote the release of the paperback edition of her novel, The Long-Shining Waters, in June/July of 2012.

Juliana Bertelsen – Duluth ($2,500) Ms. Bertelsen will use this grant to choreograph a salsa dance number, rehearse a group of dancers, and present the finished product at the Chicago International Salsa Dance Congress in Chicago, Illinois, in February, 2012.

Alberta Marana – Duluth ($1,932) Ms. Marana will use this grant to attend an oil painting workshop by Vicki McMurry in Ocean Springs, MS, in June, 2012.
