Prøve Gallery

The informal gallery opening Thursday night at Prøve Gallery, in the Sons of Norway building across Lake Avenue from the Technology Village, was the most exciting night I’ve experienced in Art in Duluth in some time.

Malignant Neoplasm on Steel, Justin Iverson

Malignant Neoplasm, Detail.

Malignant Neoplasm was one of the core experiences for me in the exhibits (the entire nontraditional gallery space holds just 4 works, plus two pieces in the Window). Unintentionally, perhaps, it reminds me of the steel in the harbor — the steel that rusts, much like we see here. By picking up those visual connections, this artist did what so few artists representing Duluth can manage.

Where most Duluth art is pocket sized, domesticated — you can take Duluth home with you, our DVDs and such say. What is going on at Prøve s different. At Prøve tonight, every art work was large, with substantial in weight and space. If/when you brought any of these works home, they don’t sit quietly on your shelf. These works transform the spaces they occupy.

…in much the way, I think, that Prøve would like to transform Duluth, and the way that a visit to Duluth transforms all who come here, I think…

So what hours is this galery going to be open? I'd like to check it out. Are they going to have an "official" grand opening?

Hours are unconfirmed at this point. The plan is for Prøve Collective to host an opening at their gallery on the second weekend of every month.

Night two of the show: so different a vibe (a new dj who played "I love candy"?), so different a crowd (a parade crowd). Still awesome.

Others?

I liked the cool minimalist aesthetic. Cool as in visual temperature, not necessarily cool/hipster. Nice Scandinavian vibe.

Great gallery. I'm really excited to see the art scene blossom in Duluth, and this is a huge step toward that -- perfectly located and very easy to enjoy for even the most skeptical citizens.

I am really glad to hear all the good words here. We don't yet have posted hours, but we'll be open when we can. Drop by our Facebook and give a shout if you want us to make the doors open at any particular time or stop by any time the lights are on!

Justin, wow. You have come along way since EVHS. You should be proud of your work -- keep it up. Would love to show some work here at school. Stop by when in town. Mr G
