Jani Lane found dead in his hotel room

jani lane warrant dead

Lead singer for 1980’s hair band Warrant was found dead at the Woodland Hills Comfort Inn in L.A. last night. Jani Lane was 47 years old and was probably best known for the hit “Cherry Pie.”  The cause of death is unknown.

Maybe a band at this years Duluth Tribute Fest, at Bayfront Park Aug. 26-27, will cover a Warrant song or two in memory of Jani?

Artists (incredibly talented-artists) Gathering at Glensheen

The world’s most talented artists (in our slightly-biased opinion) will be at Glensheen this weekend for the 17th Annual Festival of Fine Art and Craft.

Here’s what you need to know:
  • The Festival is two days, Saturday, Aug. 13 and Sunday, Aug. 14, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (both days)
  • The Festival is free
  • We recommend taking the free shuttle from UMD’s maroon lot B. It will run continuously from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Also at Glensheen: activities for the  kids, fantastic food vendors, regular-priced house tours, and 7.7 acres of stunning Lake Superior shoreline

Questions? Feel free to call or email us — 726-8910 or info @ glensheen.org.

“Don’t Feed the Plants”: Review of the Duluth Play Ground Production of Little Shop of Horrors

Little Shop of Horrors

Originally, I hadn’t planned on reviewing Little Shop of Horrors, but I was so tickled by the preview show that I had to recommend it. The show works well with the venue: the intimacy of the Play Ground enhances the campy, B-movie qualities of the musical. Delightfully kitschy costumes, hair and make-up; excellent vocal performances; and palpable chemistry among the cast members make this a fun end-of-the-summer distraction.

Romeo & Juliet and West Side Story Summer Theater Intensive

One musical, one Shakespearean classic; both tales of unfaltering romances that go against all odds. At the beginning of July the directors, Kate Horvath and Liz Larson, started working with over 60 students to teach all aspects of the show, including stage direction, backstage assistance, technical requirements, costuming and front of house. The casts alternate performances while the opposite cast runs all the technical aspects during the performance, creating a complete theater learning experience for the students.

West Side Story Performances:
August 12, 18, 20 at 7 p.m. and 14 at 2 p.m.
Romeo & Juliet Performances:
August 11, 13, 19 at 7 p.m. and 21 at 2 p.m.
Adults: $10 | Students: $8

Perfect Duluth Day Spelling, Punctuation and Proper Usage Police

From time to time the geeks who comment on this website will get into arguments about grammar, spelling and so on. It doesn’t happen too often, but when it does it kind of excites certain people while it embarrasses and annoys others. Some people just love to show off their mad English skills, while others don’t care if their capable of getting there sentences from here to they’re properly.

With that in mind, this post has been created as a bitching ground for uptight word nerds.

Don’t let this post stop you from creating your own post to showcase public blunders in the future, it just seemed like this type of stuff needs a home base.

Here are some related posts from the past:

A Small Request

To help this discussion along, we’ve started the “Perfect Duluth Day Writer’s Guide,” as a handy reference to Duluth-related nouns that are frequently botched.

Let your ranting begin.

Sure, it’s Esko Fun Days …

… but we’re going to be working hard to get rid of our stuff!

Find yourself heading south on 35 this Friday or Saturday? Take the Esko/Thompson exit. Hang a right at the top and you’ll be looking for 34 W. Riverside Drive. (it’s the second road on your left).

We’ll be there from 9-1 on Friday and 10-? on Saturday, and we need to move this stuff! We’ve got bikes, furniture, art, game systems, clothes, etc. After you’ve found your treasure, head into Esko to check out the happenings.

Community Concert

New Life Lutheran Church welcomes the community to a special outdoor concert Sunday, Aug. 21, in celebration of its one-year anniversary. Local gospel trio Hear By Faith will perform from 1-2 p.m., on the grounds at New Life’s facility at 4424 Venture Avenue in the Duluth Airpark. Root beer floats will be served by New Life youth following the concert.

Stolen Bass Guitar

Folks, please be on the lookout for a bass guitar that was taken during a burglary at my home recently. This bass is a viola-type, hollow body (think Paul McCartney, Hofner-type bass) painted green with a small spot on the back that was sanded down to the original wood. It was in a soft gig bag. I don’t have a picture, unfortunately, but really you can’t miss this if you see it. Very high sentimental value. If you happen to see it around please call the Duluth Police Department, or call me at 341-8175.

Anybody else notice a high amount of burglaries in Duluth lately? It seems that a lot of people I tell about this has a similar story of being burglarized recently.

Thanks,
Tony Derrick
