All four groups are doing incredibly well this year.
The Half Hearts have been buzzed about in the Reader numerous times already this year (check out the Reader’s review of their sophomore album, Uptown Sound, later this week). There’s also word that they’re turning their grunge cabaret album, Uptown Sound, into a musical to debut this winter.
Yester have been one of the big Duluth buzz bands this year. Their sound is reminiscent of CSN&Y, Simon & Garfunkel, as well as modern indie folksters like Fleet Foxes.
Speaking of buzz bands, Hot Ashes is an up-and-coming group from Minneapolis with deep Duluth roots. Singer-songwriter, Gus Watkins, has been called the new standard for front men in the Twin Cities. The group is a mix of 90s grunge, sweeping violin lines, angst-pop, and exceptional songwriting. You can download their new EP, Dignity, on their website.
The People Say Fox are one of Duluth’s standard-bearers. These guys are only 21, but they’re about to record their sophomore album in Kansas City. The group has evolved over the years, from Emo-indie to Math-Pop. These days they play their shows without pauses and generally pack the house.
