Battle for Duluth

I heard this morning about World of Fourcraft which uses Foursquare as an engine for a giant game with teams trying to take over New York City.

So, fellow nerds, why don’t we have this for the Twin Ports? Anyone want to tackle this? Sounds like great fun! Imagine Cakeeaters battling marauding hordes of displaced Trojans. I mean, just the team names would be a hoot!

Probably for the same reason why Groupon hasn't made it up here yet (although I still notice the ads for it on PDD every now and then). We are behind on stuff up here.

Danny, the engine that was made was just for NYC. I'm saying we should do something like that for ourselves.

You're right. I misunderstood. I thought you were asking why people in Duluth aren't playing foursquare.

There are LOTS of folks playing foursquare around here. Me being one of them. That's why I think something like this would be a natural for our geeky little corner of paradise.

@Ironic:  I'm in!

There's two guys who dominate the Starbucks by MIller Hill, and I don't think we'll ever beat them. But then, they can have it. I'm kicking ass at Caribou.

Been trying to kick ironic1 out of the roost at Amazing Grace, he's hard to stop though!

ps... I might be out of sync and those people might not be on top right now... I was traveling a bit trying to extend Duluth FSQ dominance to Nebraska and forgot to start FSQing again when I got back.

As for Groupon, I think they don't come up here just because it's not a big enough market. I mean, we can barely hold a candle to Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Wait...so this isn't a massive four square tournament being played in New York that you want to bring here? I definitely thought that this was going to be about one of my favorite childhood games and there were underground four square tournaments going on around the city. Some sort of Jets v Sharks four square scenario. *sigh* The city of Duluth isn't the only thing behind the times.

The Vista Fleet had a Groupon a while back, don't remember what the deal was, but that has been the only Duluth Groupon I have ever seen.

When you go to groupon.com the first thing you see is a massive list of cities. Guess who's not in the "D" section? I don't get how it works with the Vista Fleet if Duluth isn't even on the list? Was it intended for tourists and it was in the MSP listings?

I actually emailed them back in March wondering about Duluth and got this generic reply:

Hi DANIEL,

"Thanks for your interest! We have plans to launch in a large number of cities in 2011, which may include Duluth.

You can help Groupon come to your city by telling us about your location here: http://www.groupon.com/city_suggestions/new

Keep your eye on us, we may show up in your neighborhood soon! "

@Mathilda, I was out of town for 2 weeks in June, so now would be a good time to try to hone in on my Amazing Grace territory.

I have no idea what it takes to "build an engine" but this idea sounds like great fun.

We need to watch out for Starfire though, he is Mayor of half the town.

This makes me wish I knew even a little bit of coding. The geek in me hangs her head in shame.

Never heard of Foursquare before, but a "World of Fourcraft" set in Duluth might be enough to make me want to try. It sounds nifty!

Groupon is great! Did you see what they were offering the other day? 300,000 user names and passwords.

Am I missing something? I just see a map, no explanation...
