OMG! Near collision in Duluth Ship Canal

Runners and their families milling about foggy Canal Park almost got a big thrill this afternoon. The BBC Orinoco nearly side-swiped the South Pier Lighthouse.

I had the best angle, and I was sure this boat was going to hit. More photos in my blog.

Thanks for a interesting and scary post! Your comments on your website do bring up a point I've been wondering about though ... what is the fog horn I've been hearing (heard it this morning BTW)? Is it the one a certain doctor in town owned and citizens who didn't like it banned together and got it dismantled? Love listening to a fog horn on a sleepy morning ... (also, sorry to go off-topic.)

I am pissed, I am not hearing any fog horns and I loved when I used to hear it back in the '90s!

Great pics, BTW, Andrew! Were you screaming, "turn, turn" when the ship was bearing down on the lighthouse? Damn, close call.

Darn, I missed all the fog and yucky weather while I was sunning and enjoying the heat while on a glorious day trip to Fredric. Very cool pic!

I can't believe that anyone buys this shit. It's called single point perspective, which creates the appearance of parallel lines meeting at a single point off in the distance. This ship never came close to the piers. The mediocre photograph only makes it appear that way.

Hey, BeastofBurden. Good point about perspective. But check out this harbor footage from Friday. First, it's totally like watching "Theodore Tugboat," a PBS show I loved more than my kids did. It also lets you compare the last-second jigger of the Orinoco as it came out of the fog with the leisurely jigger of the Canadian Olympic later after the fog lifts.

Didn't a ship hit the wall a few years ago? I recall some repairs of the sheet piles having to be done.
