I have been tossing around the idea of wanting to throw a Duluth-based summer dance music festival. This festival would center around the theme of dance tunes and Minnesota (or greater Midwest) musical acts. This would not just include DJs, but a combination of bands, DJs, collectives, and whatever other kind of dance-oriented groups would be interested.

My main goal would be to have it be outside; rain or shine. I think that Canal Park would be a great destination for it since it seems to be the hustle and bustle center of the city during the summer months.

I’ve talked to a few different people around town and they said it would be something they were interested in helping out with.

I’m aware a lot of work and preparation would have to go into it if it were to work. I’d need sponsors, funding, musical acts, security, volunteers, etc.

I’m just curious: Is there a want (or demand) for this type of event? I know we have Bluesfest, Reggaefest, and the First St. concerts, and I’ve still yet to figure out how it’s going to stand out from the rest of these events. I just think it’d be a really cool thing to have a big dance bash during the summer, especially in Canal Park.

This idea is definitely still in the “hmm, interesting idea” phase.
