Horseback riding along Amity Creek Trail

I am wondering if folks who use the trail along Amity Creek between Amity Road and Maxwell/Skyline have issues with horseback riding in that area. My daughter and her friends ride their horses there when it is dried up in late spring into the fall. I also use the trail for hiking and mountain biking and like to see the trail kept as multi-use. I’m just looking for comments to see if there have been any problems encountered by folks using the trail. Please, no horse poop jokes. Thanks.

Weather permitting I use that trail over half of the year. Since it is multi-use as a cyclist I simply slow way down and give the horses all the room they need. Some have freaked out a little before but nothing ever too serious. I also make sure the horse riders are aware of my (now very casual) intent to pass them and I do so respectfully.

What exactly would our options be for 'horse poop jokes'? Even with the plea, I tried thinking up one or two - to no avail.

We love the Amity Creek Trail for horseback riding. I heard a rumor that the City is trying to close the trail to multi-use (no horses or bikes). Is this true and if so, who can we contact in opposition of this?

A little old lady answered a knock on the door one day, only to be confronted by a well-dressed young man carrying a vacuum cleaner.

"Good morning," said the young man. "If I could take a couple of minutes of your time, I would like to demonstrate the very latest in high-powered vacuum cleaners."

"Go away!" said the old lady. "I haven't got any money!" and she proceeded to close the door.

Quick as a flash, the young man wedged his foot in the door and pushed it wide open.

"Don't be too hasty!" he said. "Not until you have at least seen my demonstration."

And with that, he emptied a bucket of horse manure onto her hallway carpet.

"If this vacuum cleaner does not remove all traces of this horse manure from your carpet, Madam, I will personally eat the remainder."

The old lady stepped back and said, "Well I hope you've got a good appetite, because they cut off my electricity this morning."

I cannot see how the city could possibly enforce closing the Amity trail to multi-use. It is a snowmobile trail in the winter. In addition, it is plenty wide enough to be multiuse.

There are a few trail systems in the Amity/Hawk Ridge/Lester area.

Ski trails, used for hiking in the summer and recently opened to cycling.

The single-track mountain bike trails are multi-use for foot travel and cycling.

The Hawk Ridge hiking trails, more or less a series of colored dots to follow through the woods.

Snowmobile trails, multi use in the summer.

The Superior Hiking Trail has a spur trail in the same area, officially not multi-use, foot travel only.

I've never had a problem with horseback riders on Amity or most any other trail. There's plenty of room for us all.

Yes, the city is preparing to close that section to horses, not sure about bikes. It has been declared unsustainable for horse back riding. However, the Duluth Trails Master Plan can still be commented on either on the City's website and/or at 3 open meetings this summer. The meetings I'm told, will be well publicized. There is also a Horse Trail Alliance that will be working on creating a developed horse trail in West Duluth.

Thanks to all the bikers who have been more than courteous to my daughter and her friends when they're out riding.

I have good memories of horseback riding there when I was a kid. A family friend would bring the horses down from Normanna or wherever and come to our house in Lester Park. Yep. Our house. Then maybe a dozen or so times I had a chance to ride them back to the stable. It took a couple of hours and it was a wonderful experience.

I have also used the bike trail a number of times and sometimes I hike in the same area.

What gives? Who cares if people bring their horse on the trail? I personally think it is awesome to live in a city this size where people can also ride horses.

I'm with Wildgoose. It's great to be out on a summer morning run/hike on the trail and see the beautiful horses, fellow runners, bikers, hikers, all enjoying the day. That's what makes Duluth such a great city to live in.

The Horse Trail Alliance should consider the upteen miles of snowmobile trails for non-winter usage. Why build something when it already exists?

I too use that trail on foot and bike often. I have encountered horses and am always courteous. Dodging horse dung isn't that big of a deal (though I would pick up my dog's crap if he were to do it in the middle of any trail). However, given their sheer weight, horses are super destructive to trails when the soil is at all wet.

The Horse Alliance had attempted to access current single track that is in place for human powered exploits and were shut down.

We can certainly co-exist but trails that are purpose built for mountain biking or walking do not have a place for horses. In my humble opinion, though, Amity Creek is not such a place.

Most snowmobile trails are too wet to be used as horse trails in summer. Horses and swamps do not mix well.

I want to reiterate what maria wrote, most of the hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails are far too wet for horseback riding. Most of those trails are only accessible in the very driest of years. It's not a good solution for horseback riders.
