Explore the Choral Music of J. S. Bach

A bass in the Pacific Lutheran University Choral Union will speak on “The Choral Music of J. S. Bach: Repeat, Recycle, Revive!” on Monday, March 28. Pre-registration is required.

The presentation by Pastor Philip Nesvig of First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tacoma, Wash., will be at 6:30 p.m. in the West Lounge of the Kitchi Gammi Club. The club is located at 831 E. Superior St. in Duluth. Light refreshments will be available.

Pastor Nesvig will begin with a biographical overview of Bach, continuing with musical and textual examples. He will use recorded audio samples to illustrate how Bach’s career carried the purpose of proclaiming biblical texts in music during the worship services of St. Thomas Church and other churches in the city of Leipzig, Germany. Bach was an orthodox Lutheran with a humble and joyous piety, who relied on Luther’s Bible and the librettists of his time. Areas of study in choral music include chorale melody, motets, cantatas, the Christmas Oratorio, the St. Matthew Passion and the b minor Mass.

Pastor Nesvig has served Evangelical Lutheran Church of America congregations in Washington, Oregon and Idaho and a non-denominational church in Stavanger, Norway. In addition to singing with PLU, Nesvig has sung Bach’s music with the St. Cecilia Chorus in New York City, the Symphony Chorale of Walla Walla, Wash., and the Cathedral Choir of Stavanger. He is a 1970 graduate of PLU and a 1975 graduate of Luther Seminary, where he served briefly as the chapel organist.

There is no charge for the event, however, a free-will offering will be taken. Contact the church office of New Life Lutheran at 218-740-3597 to pre-register.
