Thirteen Moons Anishinaabe Storytelling

In the Ojibwe tradition there are hundreds of stories, some as old as the earth itself. Traditionally, these stories can only be told when there is snow on the ground. This Saturday about a dozen storytellers will be at the Sawyer Center to share some of these amazing stories. Everyone is welcome, the cost is free, but they are asking people to pre-register at the site.

Here’s a schedule
Fond du Lac Sawyer Center
February 19 1pm-6pm
Free Registration starts at 12:15 pm
3243 Moorhead Road, Sawyer, Minnesota

Here’s Jana Peterson’s article about this event from the Cloquet Pine Journal

Duluth references in Lucy

“Amanda drove and let Jenny doze in the front seat while Lucy slept in back.  They woke just south of Duluth.  They spent the night in a little town called Superior.  In the morning they stopped at the grocery store in Duluth to stock up for the week.”                   — (Chapter 17)

“The road they traveled from Duluth had stretched out ruler-straight for miles, cutting farm fields in half, as pastures fell away toward island lakes.  Dark clouds gathered in the western sky as they entered the great expanses of forest in Wisconsin.”                  –(Chapter 21)

Cheapest Tap Beer in Duluth

I’m a poor college kid, where can I go to get the cheapest tap beer in town and on what nights? Overall, what is the cheapest bar that still has a fun, non-sketchy crowd?

Timing is everything

photo“I was hoping to get the “A” down before some smart-ass came by and took a picture.”

“Well, you win some and you lose some.”

“I suppose this will be all over the internet tonight.”

“Yep, www.perfectduluthday.com!”

Banner questions

Three questions about banner photos:

1) This may have been covered before, but do those come up randomly or in some sequence?

2) How can there be no comments on any of the banners on the Flickr site? It’s odd to me that photographers haven’t typed in more info on what’s going on in the picture.

3) Why is the little girl in the cat make-up so sad?

How many U.S. presidents visited Duluth?

Do any history buffs out in cyberland know which U.S. presidents visited Duluth and when? Does anyone have some old photos?

Superior 2011 Primary Election Results

Superior Mayor
Bruce Hagen — 2,099 | 69%
Kevin Peterson — 710 | 23%
Don Raihala — 120 | 4%
Gilbert Davidson — 113 | 4%

Bruce Hagen and Kevin Peterson advance to the General Election on April 5.

Really? And I had my hopes up …

I found out someone in my neighborhood is looking to run for mayor of Superior. I was excited! The mayor living so close to my house? He’s just a regular dude wanting to better this town? That sounds awesome! But then I got this flier in my door over the weekend. There are just so many issues — spelling, grammar, weirdness … I’ll let you judge for yourself:
