I support our library and the book sales are always great but this is an event thats 5 MONTHS from now! What possessed you to post the announcement now? Please dont take this as some form of trollish reprimand or negative interwebz chiding ... posting this kind of event is what PDD is about .. but 5 Months in the future?

So I can grab it and email it to my calendar queue.

And to give you five months to get your act together to become a Friend of the Library, so you can go to the exclusive, early Wednesday sale where all the good stuff is at. Just don't be a jerk and buy up all the Popular Science and Omni magazines in bulk.

I appreciate the advance notice. Now I can add it to my phone calendar and plan ahead. I ruthlessly try to get there as early as I can before the pickings get slim!

I stand corrected!! Like I said, I'm a supporter of the library and the book sales and all. But I'd hate to have this announcment sooooo far in advance that people forget. And frankly, it just seemed odd ...but hey thats me. @ FODPL, sorry if I offended.

Don't forget President's Day is just 364 days away!

On a related note - anyone have the address of some used book stores in the area, good ones that have a fairly large selection? My favorite used book store, Books Revisited, is unfortunately in St. Cloud and while I would LOVE to take a day trip to stock up on some new reading material, my schedule isn't allowing it lately. Any suggestions?

Chester Creek Books is great. It is at 1333 E. Superior Street, in a former church. It was mentioned in a prior PDD story. Most, if not all, of the books are nice hardcovers.

There's also Amazing Alonzo Paperback Exchange at 1831 E. Superior Street. As the name suggests, this is mostly cheaper paperbacks.

I think there's a used book store out west, too, but I don't remember the name.

I think Lithis is referring to Second Look Books at 1925 W. Superior St.

I just looked in the phone book and there are a couple used bookstores out west: Second Look Books at 1925 W. Superior Street and Spirit Valley Paperback Exchange at 215 N. Central Avenue.

Fragments of History at 1 W. Superior Street is also listed under used books; I remember seeing a "Rare Books" sign in their window, but I've never been in there.

There's also something called E Z Reading at 1210 Tower Avenue in Superior.

Alas, Sunhillow Books closed a year or two ago.

I remember seeing a few good books at Allouez Antiques a while ago. (If you're lucky, they might still have Dennis Anderson's and Burt Reynold's books.) Other antique stores have used books as well, as does Savers near K-Mart. I've seen some decent books at Savers and a friend of mine made a great score there.

None of these count as a large selection, though. Savers has several shelves, but it's still only a small part of the store.

Advance notice of the book sale is good for people who want to donate books—donatations are accepted through May 15th.

RS--

If you want a road trip, you could check out Chequamagon Books in Washburn, WI--awesome selection--I make a point of getting there every year to pick up surprises and good reads.

Lakewalk Bookshop is another used book store. It's at 1427 London Road, near Chester Creek Books. I'veonly stopped by once and it wasn't open yet, so I can't comment on the selection. It seems like it would be kind of small, as it shares the building with a hair salon, but it looks nice in the photos on its web page.

Another road trip destination is Stillwater, which is an official Booktown. It has half a million books for sale.

Spirit Valley Paperback Exchange closed a few years ago. There's an Anytime Fitness there now.

Thanks! Because, you know, opening the phone book would have been too easy of an answer. Plus I'd rather get input as to people's personal preferences. Hope to make a day of book shopping this weekend!

If you go to Chester Creek Books, note that there are three floors of books (or two and a half; the upstairs is pretty small). I missed the basement, which has several rooms of books, the first time I went there.

(And this announcement was posted only 3¾ months before the book sale. Still early, but not five months.)

I think one of the reasons for the early notice on this year's sale is the fact that this is the first year in who knows how long that the sale has been held in June instead of August. Hopefully getting the word out early will help with a bit of damage control (I'm sure some people wouldn't be too happy if they missed it).
