They kind of look like surfing ninjas. 

But they don't look like the kind of surfing ninjas that would be long-lost princes from a China Sea Island who inherited magically-induced martial arts prowess.

Actually, surf culture on Lake Superior is quite strong. 
Lake Superior surfers have their own website and a very active discussion group.
