Merv Griffin – “Christmas City”

Christmas city, wonderful city
All dressed up in snow and mistletoe
Christmas city, wonderful city
Come this Christmas to the Christmas city I’ll go

Up on hilltops pick on an icicle
Chew it while you slide to fun below
Down in midtown people are nice-icle
Come this Christmas to the Christmas city I’ll go

I hear bells ringing, ding-dong ding-dong ding
I hear voices singing of a winter wonderland, come along you’ll understand

Christmas City gotta stay happy
Make a snowball — that’s the kind of throw
Christmas city, wonderful city
Come this Christmas to the Christmas city, let’s go

I hear bells ringing, ding-dong ding-dong ding
I hear voices singing of a winter wonderland come along you’ll understand

Christmas city, gotta stay happy
Snowman, snowgirl, any kind at all
Christmas city, wonderful city
Come this Christmas and you’ll suddenly find your youth
In that wonderful city of Christmas called …
the beautiful city of Christmas called …
the wonderful city of Christmas called Duluth

From wikipedia:

In the early 1960s, the station commissioned Merv Griffin to produce a song especially for the parade. The "Christmas City Song" has been used for the parade every year and also has been the closing music for all Northland's NewsCenter newscasts from Thanksgiving until Christmas.
And don't forget about the new Bentleyville theme song this year.

The song is on there as a downloadable MP3 ringtone, but the full song would be nice.

We really should have a PDD float next year. I suppose it's too late for this year.

Yeah, my idea for a PDD float is a giant inflatable troll. Maybe next year.

I'll pose for that, if you want.

Alrighty, I've been trying to hold back on the cheap plugs on PDD lately, but this is probably a good time to let anyone know that I will indeed be doing another edition of "The Annual Danny Does Duluth Christmas City of the North Parade Nothland NewsCenter Coverage Special" this year.

Does anyone have a listing of the parade entries?

Someone needs to host another Shitfaced in the City of the North parade down Michigan Street.

Adam, don't make me have nightmares of being attacked by a gingerbread man again.

Fifty years later, we're still trying to figure out where the hell "Midtown" is.

I think I must be one of the few that wax nostalgic when I hear that song. Being the parade is usally held on my birthday, I happen to love it. Or maybe it's the wine I consume while watching said parade that I love? Hmmmmm...either way I think it's a neat albeit corny tradition in our neck of the world. Who hasn't frozen their you-know-what's off watching their kid march or dance down the street? Happy Holidays all!

I would like to watch the parade online. Does anyone know where I can find it?

We were interested in participating in this year's parade. Does anyone know who to contact on this subject? Would love to be in it.

The person to contact about getting into the parade is Sharon Wallack at the Northland's NewsCenter.

Thank you to the person who posted the Christmas City song on here last year! I live in Iowa now and haven't heard it for years, but I started singing it a few weeks ago and couldn't stop. Now my kids will have to listen to it continuously like I did growing up!

My foster father worked at WDSM/KBJR TV for 30+ years. I have a lot of local TV memorabilia, including a mint 45 rpm of "Christmas City." It's nice to have a digital copy. Thank you, Sharon Wallack for many years of memories. Congratulations on your retirement.
