Other Duluth PhD students?

I’m looking to form a PhD student group for those who would like to get together as a social support network. I’ve been living in Duluth for awhile after completing coursework and I’m struggling to stay on track since I’m so far away from peers and professors. Is anyone else experiencing the same thing? I’m thinking of having the group meet once a week or every other week–depending on schedules–and providing feedback on what we all write during the intervening time. I hope there’s at least one other person in Duluth who’s going through the same thing! Please contact me!

American Liver Foundation

This is Tyler Scouton from Bratwurst. If you know me, you probably already are aware. Two years ago this month I donated 60% of my liver to a family member that was in need of a transplant. This year my cousin is raising money for the American Liver Foundation – Liver Life Walk.

The goal is $300 and she is currently at $125.

I would love to put the call out and get her over the $300 mark.

Here is the link with more information and where you can sponsor her.

Hillsider to Fink and Jewell: Why are issues relating to mining and forestry important?

The September issue of The Hillsider features candidates running for District 1 County Commissioner, Dennis Fink and Frank Jewell, answering two questions:

  • Why are you running?
  • Why care about mining and forestry?

Click on the links below for the answers. The paper issue also contains an encore presentation of questions and answers from candidates for other offices.

Dennis Fink | Frank Jewell

By the way, St. Louis County is over 6,000 square miles — larger than three states: Connecticut, Delaware and Rhode Island. It has an abundance of natural resources contributing to mining and lumber industries. Why should people in the core neighborhoods of Duluth be concerned? Read up.

Gubernatorial candidates debate in Duluth

Courtesy of Minnesota Public Radio, here’s audio from today’s debate at the Duluth Playhouse between Tom Emmer, Mark Dayton and Tom Horner.

Wooden arch from Duluth’s Spalding Hotel at State Fair

I didn’t ask around, with the crowd as thick as it was, but I’m assuming this big wooden arch must be the one from the Spalding Hotel that was retrofitted into O’Gara’s fairgrounds restaurant in St. Paul.

Minnesota State Fair attendance record

Saturday, Sept. 4, was a record setter at the Minnesota State Fair. In that single day, 234,384 people attended.

Vintage Film Equipment For Sale

I’m clearing out the closets and have decided to sell most of my vintage photo/video equipment. I’d like it to go to a person who will actually use it or appreciate its history and value.

There are over a dozen 8mm projectors and video cameras, a few Super 8mm projectors/cameras, and several random Kodak and Polaroid film cameras. Most everything has its original case. Make an offer and let me know what you’re interested in. Thanks for looking!

Labor Day at Amazing Grace

Come to the Grace on Labor Day evening, order a Peach Italian Soda with Cream, sit your butt down, and indulge in the uke-totin, ghetto-blastin, soul-inspirin, smile-makin music of Connor Garvey. Connor comes all the way from Mainetana just to make your day fantastic. Please bring your awesomeness.

Word has it that Tom Murphy, Mandolin king of Bozeman MT (and the world) will be along.

Connor Garvey. He’s not boring.
7pm, Amazing Grace

Ideas for “Neighborhood Revitalization??”

Three weeks ago, despite countless warnings, I moved into the St. Regis Apartments (up the block from the Kozy). My goal is to be a part of (spearhead?) a revitalization, of sorts. I figure, if something is going to change, I must be an active participant in it (as opposed to ye olde hoping/praying method). The current phase involves increasing the aesthetic through art (murals, etc.). I’m quite curious if anyone has thoughts on this, and most certainly, if anyone would like to get involved. Oh, won’t you please…be my neighbor?

Duluth’s Goat Hill Neighborhood

Does anyone know about the history of West Duluth’s “Goat Hill” area or how it got that name?

Duluth Farmers Market

The market is full of local produce at its peak! There is also fresh and smoked whitefish from Lake Superior Fish Co., the best wild rice and maple syrup from Spirit Lake and to top it off Peace, Love, & Chocolate just announced a Root Beer Truffle on its Facebook page! Stop by the market from 7am to noon on Saturday, 14th Ave. E. and Third St. It always helps to buy local.
