Berry picking in northern Minnesota

According to the Minnesota Dept. of Agriculture, blueberry patches from Stillwater to Cambridge are reporting a bumper crop.

While blueberries are peaking in the southern half of the state, they might not be ready for picking in northern Minnesota until July 17 — which is this weekend.

There are 26 blueberry farms statewide listed in the Minnesota Grown Directory. As for the wild ones, well … I’m not telling.

FYI - The raspberry patch on Park Point is worthless this year. Plus, the poison ivy is knee-high. So, if you do try to harvest berries from the pathetic and measly plants, you will likely only bring home a painful oozing rash.

...just trying to be helpful.

I dunno...I picked 7.5 cups of blueberries on the 4th of July weekend. Not little weenie berries either - these were a decent size. If you have a favorite patch, it's worth checking already!

Yeah, the farms may not be open quite yet, but the wild patches are definitively producing. There is a great blueberry farm on Croby Rd in Cloquet that isn't listed in the link above, last time I went it was "Blueberry Bush", this year it seems to be "Blackbirds and Blueberries" or something like that.

Strawberry season was way too fast this year.

Edgeways is referring to Blueberry Bush -- which is Curtis Bush's place at 3601 Crosby Road in Cloquet.

For some reason that's not on the statewide website, but it is on the more localized SuperiorGrown.org's list of local farms.

Which nearby blueberry upick locations are organic or "pesticide free" (like Finke's Strawberries)?

Sadly, our beloved blueberries are on the 2010 "Dirty Dozen," which is the list of highest pesticide-laden conventionally grown fruits and vegetables.

I'd love to pick a bunch of pesticide free blueberries.

I'm having trouble finding information about the farms of Hans Aas and Tim Larson. Is there a web site, phone number, or address for either? Are there any other nearby berry farms (with contact info)?

Can't wait for Strawberries again this year! Stumbled across this and my mouth is watering just thinking about it. Last year we picked hundreds of pounds a day, and while the labor is one of love, the flavor is one of undying love!
