Advice (and strong pain meds) wanted!

My back normally hates me, but now it’s hating me with a lot more angst than usual. Can anyone recommend a good chiropractor for a neck fix-er-up?

I’m hoping to find someone who can make my vertebrae play nice with each other, but not have them try to sell me some new-age hoo-haw or convince me to show up twice a week for the next few years. Thanks!!!

I really like Andy Lundgren in Woodland. He is fair and honest and really helped me!

Benson Chiropractic in Cloquet. Bit of a drive but totally worth it. He asks questions, he's very practical, and he is honest. Will go out of his way to make you feel better. He's great! (218) 879-6049.

Consider massage therapy instead of a chiroquacker.

Swan -

Chiro has healed, helped, mended me when nothing else would work. Massage will not push that little bit of bone back into place, will not re-align those disks and cartlidge.

I suspect you don't UNDERSTAND chiro, thus fear it, thus feel you must criticize it. Or maybe you read somewhere that it was quackery.

Either way, you are sadly wrong.

I totally whacked my back a few years ago, and had problems every couple of years with lower back pain. After about a month of really bad pain, the doc sent me to the physical therapy dept at St. Luke's. The woman there (can't remember her name) was great. She did the typical massage, stretching and other things, but she also explained what was going on and how to slowly stretch things out and strengthen the other muscles. That was probably 4 years ago, and I haven't had any trouble since. If I feel something starting to get out of whack, I know what stretches and exercise will settle it down.

Dr. Carl Miller at Lake Superior Chiropractic is a wonderful adjuster. He has helped me with my neck and upper back pain and he also teaches you exercises and stretches. His office has a massage therapist and the other doctor, Dr. Laura Jonker is great, too! His office is in Superior by the McDonalds and Culvers. Sometimes I have just stopped in without an appointment and they are able to see me without much waiting. Very efficient office!! 715-398-6679

John Peplenjack. He does simple but effective adjustments out of the Hunter Building on Wednesdays.

I see Dr. Connie Jacoby in the Building for Women. She's not only really good, but she is very, very affordable. Highly recommended.

Some chiropractors are good people who can actually help you. Others are indeed complete quacks who use magical machines to measure invisible nonsense and charge you a fortune. As with any service provider, always check them out with people you trust first. A friend of mine is a PT who taught me 3 simple low impact exercises and I have not had back pain in 10 years.

This is a great question. I was just Googling the crap out of "Duluth chiropractors" yesterday in an attempt to find a good one. Thanks for posting your query, BadCat!.

Here's a question: has anyone visited the recommended chiropractors for foot-related issues? My back is stellar. The lower half . . . not so much. I want to give chiropractic care a try before the podiatrist starts injecting the bottoms of my poor feet with cortisone.

BadCat: I feel your pain! I have gone to Jerry Priely for years who now practices with Fisher Chiropractor on East Superior St. He has helped me through a number of back situations including the fracture of three vertebrae. He also saw me immediately one time when I threw my back out at Menards lifting dirt-I called and he got me right in. You also might consider yoga-recommended to me by my enlightened physician. Note today's paper and the article on yoga. The teacher and the studio the article is about are both fabulous. Molly McMannus and Yoga North are both knowledgeable and helpful. In yoga terms it might help you to "strengthen your core muscles" from the time you injured your back they have probably loosened up a bit as you favor your sure back. Been there done that. Plus Molly in her weekend job mixes a mean manhattan!  Good luck!

I normally do massage therapy for my back, as an hour a month helps keep my muscles from freaking out and taking the bones with them. However, I've had two sessions in the last week and I'm still a mess. Time to escalate...
And yea, I know I need to do the stretches and yoga would help, but I need to get off my ass and get started... :/
Thanks!!!

Vicarious,

I do understand, do not fear chiropractic care and have visited several different chiropractors in several states. Their treatments involved a little slight of hand, back cracking, adjustments, spinal manipulation etc. as well as asking irrelevant questions of my personal life. Their treatments had no effect on my back pains and shoulder issues. Massage therapy, physical therapy and reiki have worked for me. I understand chiropractors work for some people but did nothing for me and was suggesting BadCat spend money elsewhere.

I would go to none other than Dr. Bob at North Country Chiropractic. I had aggressive back surgery in 1997 and he has kept me striaght and solid ever since.

Swan: so you have back and shoulder problems that were not affected by a few chiropractic treatments, therefore all chiropractors are a sham?

Despite your extensive research into this issue, I think I'll try my luck

I second the Molly and Yoga comments by TopOfTheHillMan, streching and core strength can do more long term good than an adjustment will. As you noted BadCat, you will have to get off your butt and do it, but once it is a routine you may find your troubles will be corrected.

Swan - Thanks for your response to my somewhat snarky comment. I'm still a bit confused why you labeled chiro quackery when you admit that it works...for some people.

When I was having major spinal issues, I tried massage therapy, as well as other remedies. None worked for me. Yet, I did not declare them quackery just because they didn't work...for me.

To Baci's original inquiry: Jill Jacoby cured (permanently, apparently) a debilitating neck/spine problem in 2 sessions for about a hundred bucks.

Now, I would like to talk about that foot-pad thingy that you put on your feet overnight, and in the morning the pad is black and all of the awful toxins have been expelled from your body into the Magic Pad. Now THAT is quackery.

Priley at Fisher Chiropractic! None of the scams like "we'll have to see you weekly for three months." He just fixes the problem and sends you on your way, good as new.

Melissa Jantzen in Lakeside. I have to ask her when to come back, rather than her telling me to come in every other day for the next six months. She's awesome.

She also has a good story about meeting Andy Hillstrand from Deadliest Catch when she was visiting Alaska.
