Fiber Optics: The Final Frontier

Some of the Google Fiber videos from a few months ago never made it to PDD. Since there seems to be renewed interest in the subject following the release of Google Goes to Twin Ports, it seems like a good time to highlight some of the good work put out by a wide variety of people. The director of the above video is 14 years old.

Move to Amend! Tell a Friend!

My dad and my uncle are walking from sea to shining sea to raise awareness and prompt discussion about the perils of corporate personhood. Their blog is at lairdandrobin.org.

To learn more about the amendment that made corporations people, check out movetoamend.org. (There’s a petition there if anyone wants to get crazy active.)

As with any grassroots effort, every little bit of attention helps. Thanks in advance.

Who wants an entry for Grandma’s Half Marathon?

I have one entry left for Grandma’s Half Marathon. First one to call Security Jewelers 218-722-6633 (ask for Carrie or Wynette) and is willing to make a check out SMDC Childrens Hospital for $150 gets it. $75 of the $150 is tax deductible.

I have auctioned these entries on ebay in the past with proceeds always going to local nonprofits and usually get anywhere from $300-$1,000. $150 is a bargain for this sold out event and it goes to a great cause.

Naming Rights and Personal Bias

For some reason I have the following broad scope of opinions about the new stadium/arena names.

Amsoil Arena – Fine by me. Sounds OK.
Target Field – Kind of dumb, but I can deal with it.
Mall of America Field – Kill me now.

Am I the only one with these blatantly hypocritical feelings?

By the way, Mall of America Field is at the Metrodome, in case any of you are unaware. The name change happened kind of quietly last year, but apparently some Teflon fabric panels will soon be placed on top of the dome to make it painfully clear.

Bob Dylan Way Manhole Contest

Common Language is sponsoring a competition for artists interested in designing Bob Dylan-themed cast-iron manhole covers for Bob Dylan Way in Duluth, Minnesota. The manhole covers will be cast at the 9th North Shore Iron Pour, which will be held this summer in Duluth.

Free! Real law books from a real law firm!

Did you like Ally McBeal when it was on the air? Are you devastated that Law and Order is getting the axe after almost twenty years? Isn’t the law totally rad? Do you think books add ambiance to a room? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, then here’s a deal for you:

I have to get rid of over 1,500 law books — American Law Reports (ALR), Supreme Court Reporters and Federal Reporters (and their supplements). The Federal Reporters are not a complete set, but the ALR and the Supreme Court Reporters should be.

They need to go and they need to go by the end of summer (preferably mid-to-late July). Use them as paperweights, make a coffee table out of them, stack them against your wall as a sound barrier for your noisy next door neighbor, make secret hidey holes for your flask — the possibilities are endless! Come grab some books and get creative!

You must pick up, I will not deliver. Take as many or as few as you want. Businesses are welcome! Reply to me at eutyro @ lasnem.org and I will email you back and give you a time and location to pick up your new treasure!

Thanks for looking!
