Speak Out, Superior!

It’s time to SPEAK OUT Superior against sexual violence!

Superior / Douglas County Leadership, CASDA (Center Against Sexual and Domestic Abuse, Inc.) and UWS are planning a “Speak Out” during April, Sexual Assault Awareness Month. This event will be held Friday, April 16, starting at the UWS Yellowjacket Union with a march/walk from 4pm-5pm and a “Speak Out” from 5pm-7pm at the Superior Community Gardens — Broadway & Hammond (kitty corner from the Trade & Commerce Market Place).

Speak Out, Superior is free and open to anyone interested in ending sexual violence in her/his community.

The march will follow Belknap Ave., stopping at the Courthouse for 60 seconds of silence in honor and recognition of victims, and will continue to Hammond Ave., ending at the Community Garden (Hammond and Broadway) where there will be a “Speak Out” from approximately 5pm-7pm.

The “Speak Out” will include State Representative Nick Milroy, victim testimonies, support initiatives, music, and more. There will be free parking in Lot 2 located by Burger King and behind the Yellowjacket Union. Along the march/walk, UWS Health and Counseling Services will have red flags marking the path and honoring those victimized, along with signage of facts, comments, and quotes relative to abuse.

Chances are that you or someone in your life has been or will be affected, directly or indirectly, by sexual violence. The ripple effect of sexual violence touches lives far beyond what one might ever imagine. It affects the lives of children, parents, relatives, friends, neighbors, co-workers, roommates, and strangers.

Help give courage to those who can speak out to speak out; lend a voice to help those who cannot be heard to be heard. This SOS (Speak Out Superior) is for us all.

Friday April 16th is also the national Day of Silence sponsored by GLSEN. Many area high school and college students will be taking a day-long vow of silence to bring attention to the silence members of the GLBT community have faced and continue to face.

Here's a Day of Silence PSA to explain.

I thought it would be funny if the guy just stood there and said nothing for 46 seconds.

It's marvelous that a Day of Silence and a Speak Out event are happening on the same day. Truly marvelous.
