Wilco is sold out – Win tickets here

Did you come to party, Duluth? I know you did.

Tickets to Friday night’s Wilco show at the DECC Auditorium are sold out. If you’d like to win tickets from PDD, here’s how:

If you went to the foggy, rainy 2007 concert at Bayfront Festival Park, share your favorite memory of that show in the comments. If you didn’t go, maybe you have a good excuse for missing such a sensational show, so share that.

At some point either tonight or tomorrow, I’ll pick a winner from those who comment.

(Oh, and I know the audio is crappy on the embedded video, so you don’t need to comment about that.)

I took my 9 month old son to the show for his first concert. We sat just outside the cone of the speakers but I had his ears protected anyway. It was rainy and cold enough for Mr. Tweedy to wear a hat all night but I needed to show my boy my favorite band. He had a blast (or at least I did) while he fell asleep dancing to the band in my arms.

This is easy:

I don't remember during which song this occurred, but in the middle of a particularly soaring and beautiful guitar part from Nels Cline, and when the mist and fog were particularly haunting, a ship was passing out of the bay and about to go beneath the lift bridge.

At that moment, Jeff Tweedy turned and noticed the ship, shimmering and huge in the wind and fog. For an instant, you could see a sort of utter amazement in his face, shocked at the beauty of the scene. He stared for a moment at the ship, looked back at the crowd, and then turned again to watch the ship.

It was the best moment in a truly extraordinary concert.

I did catch their previous peformance in Duluth about a year before that, but stories like vicarious' have continually caused me to kick myself for not trying harder to squirm out of work the night of the legendary Bayfront performance. And the kicking continues now that my trip this weekend has been canceled and tickets are sold out. I'm afraid the stage will be set for a future rife with pummeling of myself if I don't try my hardest to get these tickets. Please stop the violence.

Add to that that the reason for my trip being canceled is financial, so free tickets are likely the only way the wife and I will go.

I have several fun memories from the show and the night before the show.

- Low had its sound carried away by the wind and rain, and I was worried that the same thing would happen to Wilco. When Wilco started playing, the sound was clear as a bell. That was a cool feeling.

- The night before the show, my friend Chris called me and said, "Hey! Wilco is hanging out at Hell's Kitchen." I was at work, so I called him back a little while later. He told me that they had asked him to recommend a good dive bar. He told them to check out RT Quinlan's. My friend and I went over to RT's later that night and spotted a couple of members of Wilco sitting at a table, one of whom was Glenn Kotche, whom I had met the previous summer because I let him into the Great Lakes Aquarium for free (I was a custodian there at the time). We started talking to them and hanging out and a Wilco song came on the jukebox. My friend said, "Do you think they even know that there are members of the band here?" Glenn just smiled and said, "I hate it when that happens."
We ended up on the guest list for the Bayfront show that year, so I guess I really don't deserve to win tickets to this Wilco show.

Yep, I'm pretty sure that was '07.

I was "working" at the show serving beer. It must have been the cold rainy weather that influenced everyone to drink stout. After a couple of other taps were hastily switched over to 'Big Boat' toward the beginning of the show, they were literally open til the end. Even with the extra taps, stout drinkers waited in long lines, though they could've grabbed an IPA immediately. I guess it was just the proper fuel for hippy-dancing in the cold rain.

Vicarious: If I remember correctly, the guitar solo you are referring to was during "Impossible Germany, Unlikely Japan."

One of my favorite memories of the Wilco concert at Bayfront is that it occurred on a rainy night in September, 2007. It was originally scheduled for August 2007, but the show was canceled because Nels Cline had the chicken pox.

Starfire started a t-shirt design contest containing the phrase "Nels Cline Gave Me the Chicken Pox" after the re-scheduling of the show in August. The finalists were posted on PDD August 25, 2007. The winner of the contest was announced on PDD August 29, 2007.

Their previous concert in Duluth occurred on Sun, July 2, 2006 at the DECC.

Other Memories:

1). I bought one of two light blue titty tees from Starfire with the "Nels Cline gave me the chicken pox" winning logo.

2) I met the other "buyer" of the blue titty tee; she and her boyfriend were from the cities but had checked-out PDD and found Starfire's T-shirt shop. I was her off and on girlfriend for the evening, as she and her boyfriend did not know other people in Duluth.

3) I got their early to put my lawn chairs in a good spot (HA-HA; waste-o-time)

4) While helping CD set-up the KUMD table/ welcome people, my son's reading teacher, who was someone I was friends (had a crush on) in college, walked by. I yelled out "Hi Mr.—-", and waved to him like a third grader.

4). Then Christa came by and introduced me to the T-shirt design winner.

5) Crystal asked Starfire to bring an awesome card she made for Niles, and possibly herself, backstage.

5). The Jeff Tweedy ship moment (before mentioned). Except once Jeff looked back at the ship in awe, the other band member looked as well. I believe Jeff said something, but cannot remember what.

6). My friend Sherman was up from the cities for the concert. I was not drinking then, so I performed a "Ha Ha Ha" Purple dance to Wilco's "Cash Machine" as I saw him and Berv wait in a two-mile line for a beer (yes a weird song to do a triumph dance with a bottle of water).

7). I lost many friends to the beer line, but my twin tight T-shirt gal (they had flasks) and Jeff Tweedy stayed with me.

I will be sad to miss their third concert in Duluth, but as I'm on unpaid medical leave since January until April, I can hardly afford ramen for me and the kid.

The August concert was supposed to be a first date for the now love of my life. I was so bummed because I couldn't think of a better scenario for kismet. (And it helped that she really wasn't aware of the band, and what Wilco virgin wouldn't fall in love with them right then and there and then turn to me with huge cred.

Things worked out, and for the real show we were comfortable enough which each other to snuggle in a blanket. I won't forget standing behind her during California Stars with my hands on her hips and this wash of utter bliss. That tender moment totally excused my "freakout" dancing to Kidsmoke. She was already too far gone on the band, me, and that awesome thickness of the night.

My favorite memory is the ship passing in the background amidst the foggy haze. It was such a surreal setting to begin with the elements and then to have that ship pass by made it all the more fitting. There was also the guy who was smoking chronic all night and doing a hippy dance in circles before tripping over some cords and into my legs and monopod belonging to my camera while I was on assignment for the News Tribune.

Tony D: Yes, I think it was "Impossible Germany"...the most soaring of Nels Cline riffs!

Purple: I think you're right. The band saw Jeff staring at the ship, and then they all turned and looked, apparently with equal awe. I think his comment was something like, "Damn". Or, "Jeez". Or, "Holy shit".

And what I/you/others hope is my last statement about the Wilco Bayfront concert, when I explained the nights events to my friend Rich in Scotland, his response was "You didn't snog anyone?"

Purple

Paul, not fair! I should win for merely remembering the YEAR of the concert. Seriously, why'd you change it?

That show was on a Tuesday night, I'm excited they decided to give us a Friday night this time. My son was 11 days old on 9/04/07. We were pretty strapped for cash since we needed to take some time off from work to take care of the little one. That evening we went to a friends house that lived on the Hillside and sat on their back porch and listened to the first couple of songs. I got the chills when they started playing Either Way. The sound up on the hill would be really good for about 10 seconds, get muffled for a few, and then clear up again. We ended up driving down to the parking ramp next to the Depot and watching there for a bit, but we just couldn't stick around for too long in the dreary weather with an infant. To me it was well worth it all, because now I can tell my kid the first band he ever heard live was Wilco.

I did not go to the show. I was too busy being absorbed in crappy "music." It really is quite shameful that I had such bad musical taste two years ago and missed such an awesome concert. Saw them at the 10,000 Lakes Festival. Up close and awesome.

Purple

I can tell my kid the first performers he ever heard live were Paul Simon & Bob Dylan, when he was 7 days old, muffled from my father's back-porch.

I could lie and say that "Little Pirate" is dying to see Wilco; he's not. He's already going to his grandmother's Friday night. Which leaves me alone, broke, and without Wilco tickets.

I loved that show on the foggy night -- everything was so cool looking -- especially when the ship went by behind the stage wowing even the super cool Jeff Tweedy. It is definitely one of my favorite concert going experiences. At one point I wormed my way toward the front to dance when I noticed a local amateur photographer (you know the guy) had partially climbed up on the stage and pointed his camera up at Jeff Tweedy. Tweedy didn't look like he took to kindly to this photographic intrusion and made a stomping motion towards him. Our friend the photographer got a great picture of Tweedy's shoe. It was pretty funny.

Cappy wearing his bright yellow smiley face slicker. Plus the Monroe sisters and some tequila. There was peeing behind parked cars by the slip also.

I'm wearing my "Nels Cline gave me the chicken pox" shirt right now. How coincidental!

Purple, thanks for pointing out the correct year of the Bayfront show. The notes on the YouTube video said it was 2008, and I foolishly trusted that.

Thanks everyone for the excellent stories. I'm going to retire to my chambers, perhaps discuss this with some of my advisers, and return in a few moments with my decision.

Doodle Bug:

Didn't actually purchase a ticket to the show, but three of us sat upon my friends porch watching the cold fog settle over Bayfront, you could see some lights from the stage, one could mostly see what looked like Bayfront covered in a blanket of smoke. My friends lived off Skyline near 8th and 5th I believe, with their front porch perched up on one the steepest hills in Duluth, we could hear every eery, fog filled, glorious echo of the band. By far the best FREE concert I have ever seen.

OK, after some deliberation, we have a winner.

Purple, even though you overwhelmed the PDD switchboard, we're still giving you the tickets. You can thank my consultants, who lobbied for you despite my insistence that you were trying too hard.

Congratulations to Purple and thanks to everyone for sharing your stories. Viva la Wilco!

Riding the bike home a couple hours after the show and heading 'up' 4th St in the rain and drizzle I looked up and saw the trunk of a maroon sedan. After proceeding to hit said sedan with my right knee and ribcage I realized I had better get moving again or I would stay there and cry all night. Turns out the knee was fine but the soft tissue connecting all the ribs got just plain shredded - without cracking one rib. Two months later grappling w/ the little bro he busted apart all the knitting tissue with a bear hug. THAT f'n hurt! Sure love those Brewhouse beers in the rain!

C-Freak, I agree with Adam; you're singular. I'm taking another single mother/ Wilcohead who could also not afford a ticket.
