uDon't care? You posted a blog about something you don't care about? Weird. Seems like a lot of trouble to me.

i'll admit. i want one.
But I'm still using the 2nd or 3rd generation iPod I got used from Starfire. Everything looks shiny and new and magical to me.

Show me a similar product for $250. I'll wait.

Don't worry. Apple will always launch products at least 50% higher then they should for the new iProducts. That way they can over charge their faithful Apple followers. Then in 6 months drop the price a couple hundred for the general public.

Also, iDon't care about the over-hyped nature of this product. The product may be fine and useful. But all the tweeting, news and facebooking about the product and how AWESOME it 'might' be is a bit too much.

But I give it to Apple and their marketing team they get the word out! I just am not a fan of the over hyping.

Terry G.

I certainly don't blame Apple for the over-hype. They are typically about as close-lipped as you can get when new products are to be announced.

I was following some of the pre-release fanboy hype and was hoping that even a fraction of what was rumored turned out to be true. It wasn't but then, that's what hype is.

I'll likely get a second gen 3G when the prices drop.

I'm an Apple user, and I'm not sure what the thing is even for. It's single-tasking, meaning it can run only one program at a time. It's incompatible with flash, meaning you can't watch Hulu or most other streaming video on it. It doesn't even have a USB port. All software you run on it has to be acquired through the iTunes App Store.

So basically it's a big iPod Touch. I don't know why getting rid of the keyboard and limiting its capabilities will improve your laptop.

They say its killer function is that you can read books and magazines on it. Wow. Because books and magazines themselves aren't very portable. Listen: If you weren't going to read an actual book, you aren't going to read the same thing on a $500 device. It's like that treadmill/coatrack in your basement. Change your life through purchasing? It doesn't work.

Starfire

I will be first in line for one. With Youtube now supporting HTML5 and a rumored iPhone Hulu app in the works who needs Flash? Flash is a CPU hog and is the number one cause of browser crashes.

Remember when people dissed the introduction of the iPod?

Hard to believe they will make current iphone users pay another 30/month for 3g access. Can att's network handle mobile based video on its already stressed network? Does Duluth even have full 3g with att?

Starfire speaks truth.

My roomate is a nursing student and needs a suitcase to carry all her books. Putting all of those onto a 1.5 pound device would be pretty magical. Plus a shopping list, class notes, something to do in-between classes, etc.

The 3G service is a for separate device. Even if you have two iPhones on the same account you have to pay the $30 data plan for each phone. Here, it's no commitment pre-pay, ordered through the iPad. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't even exclusive to AT&T by the time the 3G model comes out.

They say the killer feature is using it.

No 3G in Duluth, but AT&T might have the best voice coverage in town. Inverse for MSP.

I should not be ranting. I really don't feel this passionate about it.

dropkick

Yeah, Duluth doesn't even get 3G with AT&T as it is, which is pretty inexcusable. My anti-hipster friends find it pretty important to point out at every opportunity that I'm paying for the full 3G data plan even though I'm not getting 3G here.

Boo to that.

Regarding the functionality of the thing, it seems to me that you'd be making an infinitely better investment to just get a nice netbook, if you really need to have an extra-portable webby machine. You'd get at least double the functionality (minus the touchscreen, of course) for like half the price.

I'm really curious to see how Apple will end up making this thing a necessity to the average consumer, because right now to me it looks like the most snooty, "in" club, affluent piece of plastic and metal on the market.

Barrett Chase

I can see why putting all those nursing books into one lightweight device would be a great benefit, but why does someone need a standalone device for that purpose? I don't understand why someone would want a laptop, an iPhone, AND and iPad. Couldn't the laptop run software to store all those books, too? That seems WAY preferable to this iPad.

I'm just not seeing the benefit of carrying around a third device that does far, far less than your laptop does, and is not nearly as portable as your phone, which does all the same things (more actually).

Unless of course, it's just an image thing.

Barrett Chase

Mainly I just have a chip on my shoulder about Apple, because my Powerbook, which cost more than the car I drove at the time of purchase, shit the bed after just a 2-3 years of service. After that, because I couldn't afford the MacBook Pro, I bought a MacBook which now runs like crap after one year. My iPhone also crapped out a couple of days ago, and will apparently have to be replaced.

How many thousands upon thousands of dollars are we going to give this company for its disposable products? And to what end?

Larry madicher

Ya and how much money do stupid people pay for Windows products that are nothing more than crap. Bill Gates needs to give it up and go in the scrap metal business as nothing Microsoft ever releases is worth a thing. Some people are jealous cause they can't afford to buy an Apple. It's like comparing a Honda with a Mercedes. What a joke!

Barrett Chase

Actually, Bill Gates and Microsoft do not manufacture computers. They manufacture software.

Barrett Chase

Anyway, I actually realize that I'm just transferring my anger regarding my bad Mac experiences to the people who want this device. You want it? Buy it. It's none of my business, and I hope you have fun with it. I'll respectfully bow out of the conversation now.

One last jab, though: Linux is free. Baci, I know we've had our differences, but I'm beginning to see things your way.

The lack of Flash could be a problem, but it'll be interesting to see how the H264 / HTML 5 things shakes out. H264 is a much better way to compress video than the Flash players. Even most broadcast-quality video is being delivered with H264 now. But it seems a lot of sites still have Flash driving functions, so that's either really dumb or really ballsy on Apple's part as they claim the ultimate web-browsing experience on the iPad.

I think there's definitely a market between the laptop and iphone. The web and even e-mail on a small device is a pain in the @$$. I don't have any interest in an e-reader, I've got my stack of magazines next to the loo. But for anybody who needs to present or show images and make them look great, this would be useful. For a photographer, designer, salesperson, real estate agent, trade shows and more, I could see definite advantages to this over a laptop / projector setup or even just a laptop. If the screen quality and viewing angle is what they say it is, that's a pretty big deal. That has always been Apple's market, people who work with images.

I've generally had good experience with Apple stuff, including repairs. But I can understand Barrett's anger. I have the same anger currently directed at Sears / Kenmore.

I have only had excellent luck with Apple products (sorry Barrett.) I am still sporting my G4 12" Powerbook and every Apple product I have purchased is still kicking (hello Brian and Monroe.) I was waiting for this announcement to decide whether to get a MacBook Pro or whatever Tablet they released. When it comes down to it I don't really need a new laptop, the iPad will serve nearly all my needs and the apps that will be made for this device are gonna rawk.

I'm hoping 3G will be coming to Duluth soon based on the number of cell tower upgrades AT&T has been applying for through the planning commission/city council.

Note on Apple:

- In the words of my former boss, "God help Steve Jobs' soul and the empire that he helped creat." But then he's an MS guy.

- Way back when, BeOS came out and had to use hardware specific computers ("beboxes") because apple was tight-lipped about its mac hardware. Well I suppose part of it was that the Be creator used to be a major player at Apple. Unfortunately Apple and then afterwards Palm Inc. ruined and effectively dissolved a perfectly fast, good operating system. (Sorta, there are clones out there).

- Now, one thing fascinating about apple hardware is the monitor and how far advanced it was in comparison to intel-based desktops and the monitors they came with. But then, after seeing a SGI system throwing around 3D renders of small model cars bouncing off each other in bubbles complete with shadows, lighting, and reflections on a screen saver back in '90, I became less impressed with mac. I'm talking about the monitor clarity not the software.

- Apple overprices stuff, duh, everyone knows that.

- Once your with apple, you're stuck with apple. Most software guys I know own a few systems with other OS's for that reason. OS X wasn't that bad for many, but had severe compilation problems for some.

Rant on apple over.

Note on the future of having an electric note pad:

- As Alton Brown says, avoid single purpose utensils at all cost. Of course, he's talking about the kitchen, but I think the analogy applies.

- I want to be able to take a bath while reading a book without accidentally dropping my expensive electro-pad in the tub :^)

Note on Flash in general:

- It's not that great (what really chaps my ass is Macromedia)

I love Jobs' take on education. Brilliant in his assessment. Break the ed unions, and we'll start competing with the rest of the world. Education unions do nothing for our kids other than protect shitty teachers and prevent competition. I also love his opinion on Hussein's chance for re-election.

"You're headed for a one-term presidency," he told Obama at the start of their meeting, insisting that the administration needed to be more business-friendly. Jobs also criticized America's education system, saying it was "crippled by union work rules," noted Isaacson. "Until the teachers' unions were broken, there was almost no hope for education reform." Jobs proposed allowing principals to hire and fire teachers based on merit, that schools stay open until 6 p.m. and that they be open 11 months a year.
