Dance. Dance. Revolution.

Pastors for Peace are on their way to Cuba again to bust the U.S. blockade. They’ll either deliver 100s of tons of needed aid to the island, or land in prison.

Come on out to Lafayette Community Center on the Point this Tuesday, July 7 to send them off and shake your salsa thang.

  • 6PM Cuban dinner (veggie) and a speaker on the Cuban health care system
  • 7:30PM salsa lessons with Juliana Bertelsen… then we dance

Come for all or part of the evening. Cash donations for the caravan taken at the door. It’ll be fun. And humanitarian. Can’t beat that.

Look at Che dance. He is such a happy man!

But later that night he wrote in his journal:

February 18, 1957 "....I ended the problem giving him a shot with a 32 (caliber) pistol in the right side of the brain, with exit orifice in the right temporal. He gasped for a little while and was dead. Upon proceeding to remove his belongings I couldn't get off the watch tied by a chain to his belt, and then he told me in a steady voice farther away than fear: "Yank it off, boy, what does it matter.... I did so and his possessions were now mine."

I agree with Pastors for Peace's mission. But how in bloody hell can you equate their mission with Che's?

I'm not a member of the cult of Che either, AJP, but a few thoughts:

Che the man and Che the symbol are different. For many people in the global south he stands for liberation from despots and colonizers... like Thomas Jefferson projects a bigger idea than his own penchant for enslaving and sexually exploiting other people. I don't excuse Che's cruelties, of which I am plenty aware, but the guy is complicated.

More to the point, I wasn't trying to equate Che and PfP. The pic was eye-catching and a little funny. I've used images of Dick Cheney to promote anti-war events, but that doesn't mean he's my hero.

Anyhow, I hope that doesn't stop you from checking out the PfP gig.

That would be great if you found a picture of Dick Cheney dancing with kids like that.

It IS a funny pic, but some may get the wrong signal, as Che was a Grade A A**hole. Cheney himself may agree, but the irony is that Cheney has Che's name in his: CHEney. And, Cheney is also a Grade A A**hole.

Cheney dancing with children would just be creepy.

I can't think of anything about Cheney that is not creepy. I know that's a double negative, but if I were gonna list the things about him that are creepy, I'd be here all day.

Thanks for the history lesson on Che the man and Che the symbol, I studied history and traveled all around Latin America, and still managed to learn almost nothing about the man until today. All I knew was that there was a poster of him with a beret and a red star in at least one third of the dormitory rooms at my old college, and in all music stores in America. All of them, who know, maybe even I-tunes sells them. I also know that a lot of the same people that have that poster also have a bob marley poster. I was never cool enough nor did I ever smoke enough weed (even on my pottiest headed days) to have either of those posters in my dorm room. And it looks like now that was a lucky accident for me, considering what a purported scoundrel Che was. Being a socially awkward nerd is apparently one of those little gifts that just keeps on giving. Too bad I wasn't able to appreciate that more when I was younger.
